Family PALAEOLOLIGINIDAE Naef, 1921
Diagnosis
“Slightly more slender [than Beloteuthidae ] Teuthoidea with completely Loligo -like shell, ending anteriorly in a long ‘free rhachis’ posteriorly with a leaflike flag consisting of cone flag and the lateral plates. Palaeololigo Naef, 1921a = Teuthopsis Wagner [non-Eudes-Deslongchamps] from the Solnhofen slates (Malm) and similar forms from the Upper Cretaceous of Lebanon ” ( Naef 1921b).
Remarks
With the type genus, Naef (1922) included Tusoteuthis Logan, 1898 in the family. Phylloteuthis Meek and Hayden, 1861 and Ptiloteuthis Gabb, 1869 were also included with much doubt. They are discussed later. Engeser and Keupp (1999) regarded the family name as a synonym of Beloteuthidae Wiltshire, 1869 ; this is not accepted here. Beloteuthidae includes Teudopsis Eudes-Deslongchamps, 1835 . Fuchs (2006a) included Rachiteuthis donovani in the family Palaeololiginidae ; this is not accepted here, as the broad median field of R. donovani is unlike the rachis of the family.
