Barronopsis barrowsi ( Gertsch 1934) View in CoL
Figs. 45–46, 49–50, 64–65, 68
Agelena barrowsi Gertsch 1934: 23 –24, fig. 9 (male only). Bonnet 1955: 185.
Agelenopsis (Barronopsis) barrowsi Chamberlin & Ivie 1944: 127 . Roewer 1954: 41. Roth 1954: 3, 7, figs. 1–2 (m). Barronopsis barrowsi Roth & Brame 1972: 42 View in CoL . Roth & Brown 1986: 5. Platnick 1997: 618. Platnick 2009. Barronopsis campephila Alayón 1993: 5 View in CoL –9, figs. 2a–c. new synonym.
Types. Barronopsis barrowsi View in CoL : Male holotype, female allotype, 2 female paratypes from Fort Meyers, Florida, 1930, W.M. Barrows, in AMNH (holotype examined). Allotype and paratypes probably are B. jeffersi View in CoL (see above). Barronopsis campephila View in CoL : male holotype, female allotype, 2 male and 1 female paratypes. Holotype and 1 male paratype in MNHN (not examined), allotype and other paratypes in GA (paratypes examined).
Remarks. Alayón (1993) provided no diagnosis that could separate B. barrowsi and B. campephila males. Males and females of both species appear morphologically indistinguishable and B. campephila is here considered a junior synonym of B. barrowsi .
Diagnosis. Very similar to B. stephaniae . Distinguished from all Barronopsis by the following characters. Males with characteristic enlargement of embolus tip (Figs. 49–50), visible at 100´); additional diagnostic features are visible at 400´: embolus with small subdistal membranous flare and pipe-shaped tip. Bowl shaped excavation surrounded by one or two sclerotized projections (Figs. 49–50). Atrial guides broadly lobed, not tooth-like. Copulatory duct twist tight, with region of twist not evidently enlarged.
Description. Tables 2–5. Small spiders.
Male: n=37. TW 1.75–2.09 (1.94± 0.10), CW 0.87–1.06 (1.00± 0.05), DSL 2.47–2.93 (2.73± 0.12), ITL 1.82–2.39 (2.06± 0.13). Male holotype: TW 1.63, CW 0.84, DSL 2.24, ITL 1.86. Edges of embolus tight coils continuous, forming an apparent complete cylinder
Female: n=44. TW 1.56–2.17 (1.67± 0.14), CW 0.84–1.18 (1.0± 0.07), DSL 2.20–3.08 (2.61± 0.17), ITL1.33–2.01 (1.67± 0.14).
Distribution. Apparently restricted to Florida south of approximately 28°N, with the exception of two disjunct populations in extreme northeast Florida (Nassau County, Fernandina Beach) and adjacent southeast Georgia (Glynn County, Jekyll Island). Both localities are small coastal islands, separated by Cumberland Island and 40km of irregular coastline. Both populations were sampled by Ivie (7 December 1962) and may be components of a contiguous coastal population. Both populations lie within the current population boundaries of B. stephaniae . Several probable B. barrowsi females from Florida (St. Lucie, Collier, Hillsborough, and Highlands Counties) in museum collections were not associated with males and are not included in this account.
Material examined. CUBA. Guantanamo, Ojito de Agua (Alayón), April 1986: 1 male (GA). Cayo Fortuna, Yateras (Alayón), March 1989: 1 male, 1 female (GA). United States. FLORIDA: Lee County, Fort Myers (Barrows), February 1930: 1 male ( AMNH). Nassau County, Fernandina Beach (east side) (Ivie), 7 December 1962: 2 males, 4 females ( AMNH). Polk County, Winter Haven, can-traps in yard (collector unknown), 7 December 1967: 1 male (FS). Winter Haven, can-traps in yard (collector unknown), 3 February 1969: 1 male (FS). Winter Haven, can-traps in yard (collector unknown), 19 August 1969: 1 male (FS). GEORGIA: Glynn County, 2 mi. W Jekyll Island (Ivie), 7 December 1962: 32 males, 20 females ( AMNH).
