Macronemus asperulus White, 1855 View in CoL
( Figs 33–38 View FIGURES 33 – 38 )
Macronemus asperulus White, 1855: 376 , pl. 9, fig. 8; Monné, 2005: 177. Aethomerus asperulus ; Gemminger & Harold, 1873: 3142.
Aethomerus verrucosus Pascoe, 1866: 281 Syn. nov.
Macronemus verrucosus ; Monné, 1994: 43 (cat.); Monné, 2005: 178.
Macronemus asperulus was described from Venezuela, and Aethomerus verrucosus from Magdalena in Colombia. Pascoe (1866) treated A. verrucosus similar to A. asperulus but more uniformly colored, the tubercles on the sides slender and prominent, and the spaces between the lines of tubercles on the disc more deeply excavated. Examination of the male holotype ( Figs. 33–34 View FIGURES 33 – 38 ) of M. verrucosus , the female holotype of M. asperulus ( Fig. 35 View FIGURES 33 – 38 ), and also a series of specimens ( Figs. 36–38 View FIGURES 33 – 38 ) revealed variations in the color pattern, the degree of excavation of the pronotum disc, the shape of the prothorax lateral tubercle, the granules, and the punctures on the elytra. Based on this variation, we propose the new synonymy.
