Ypsiloncyphon boukali sp. n.
( Figs. 13 View FIGURE 13 J, 23)
Type material. Holotype ( NMW): male, “ INDIA: Kerala, 3. 1. 1999 30km NNE Trivandrum, 300 m Kallar Bridge, 08º45’N 77º05’E leg. D. Boukal (41)”, genit. s. no. HY 938.
Description. Male. Body ( Fig. 13 View FIGURE 13 J) oval, well convex dorsally, shiny, closely covered with silver setae. Coloration of head and pronotum dull brownish orange; antennae and legs pale brown, but femora infuscate; scutellar shield, elytra, meso- and metaventrites and abdomen black.
Head relatively large, flat, finely punctate, front margin of clypeus shallowly concave. Eyes large, slightly prominent; the distance between eyes about 2.1 times as long as the maximum diameter of an eye. Pronotum punctate as on head, depressed in lateral parts; anterior and lateral margins straight; posterior margin gently arcuate; antero- and postero-lateral corners obtuse, weakly projecting anteriorly in anterior corners; PW/PL 2.27. Scutellar shield relatively small, punctate as in head, equilaterally triangular. Elytra ovate, widest at the middle, densely punctate, strongly convex dorsally in caudal 2/5; humeral parts projecting dorso-anteriorly; apices rightangled; EL/EW 1.18; EL/PL 3.93; EW/PW 1.47; TL/EW 1.48. Sternite III widely glabrous in lateral parts, serrate in mesal part of anterior margin.
Caudal margin of sternite VII ( Fig. 23 View FIGURE 23 A) arcuate. Tergite VIII ( Fig. 23 View FIGURE 23 B) moderately sclerotized, posterior margin deeply concave, serrate in lateral part of posterior margin, with a pair of long apodemes; tergite IX ( Fig. 23 View FIGURE 23 C) almost membranous, semicircular, with a pair of long lightly sclerotized apodemes. Sternite IX ( Fig. 23 View FIGURE 23 D, broken in apical part) well sclerotized, very long, Y-shaped, covered with transverse furrows in apical parts. Tegmen ( Fig. 23 View FIGURE 23 E) long, moderately sclerotized, Y-shaped, shorter than sternite IX; apical 2/3 (parameres) bifid, bearing minute spines in apical parts. Penis ( Fig. 23 View FIGURE 23 F) long, moderately sclerotized, a little shorter than tegmen; pala long, expanded in basal 1/4, with almost straight basal margin, gently tapered posteriorly; parameroids long, sparsely punctate in apical part, bearing short setae in apical part, with rounded apex; trigonium short and wide, protruding from apical 1/3 to 1/10, truncate at apex, covered with minute serrations in apical part.
Female. Unknown.
Measurements. Male (n = 1): TL 1.48 mm; PW 0.68 mm; PL 0.30 mm; EW 1.00 mm; EL 1.18 mm.
Distribution. India.
Remarks. This is a remarkable species in having the following characteristics: 1) tergite VIII serrate in lateral part of posterior margin, 2) sternite IX and tegmen very long, and 3) parameroids bearing short setae in apical part. Related species are uncertain.
Etymology. The species is named after Dr. D. Boukal, the collector of the holotype.
