Key to the Embolemidae View in CoL View at ENA of Japan
Females (unknown in the species not present in the key to the females)
1. Head + mesosoma fusiform ( Figs 6 View FIGURE 6 C, 7); tarsi very slender ( Fig. 7 View FIGURE 7, 8. 7 ); eye strongly reduced ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 A); scutellum very long and narrow, alutaceous, trapezoidal, with shorter base posterior ( Figs 6 View FIGURE 6 B, C); metanotum reduced to very narrow longitudinal carina forming a bridge upon the first region of propodeum ( Figs 6 View FIGURE 6 B, C)................................................................................................. Trogloembolemus fujiei Olmi, Mita et Guglielmino , sp. nov. 1
- Head + mesosoma not fusiform (as in Fig. 8 View FIGURE 7, 8. 7 ); tarsi normal as in ( Fig. 8 View FIGURE 7, 8. 7 ); eye normal ( Figs 2 View FIGURE 2 A, 3A, 4A, 5A); scutellum subcircular ( Figs 2 View FIGURE 2 B, 3B, 4B, 5B); metanotum short and transverse ( Figs 2 View FIGURE 2 B, 3B, 4B, 5B)............................... 2 1. Trogloembolemus fujiei is a very characteristic species with antennae longer than head + mesosoma + metasoma and antennal segment 3 more than 3 × as long as segment 2. These characters are not present apparently in the other three above species. However, we have not included these characters in the above key, because Hilpert (1989) has shown that in Embolemus ruddii Westwood, 1833 , they are variable. We cannot exclude that the same variability can be present also in T. fujiei .
2. Dorsal anterior surface of propodeum shiny, smooth, weakly granulated, not rugose ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 B).............................................................................. Embolemus honshuensis Olmi, Mita et Guglielmino , sp. nov.
- Dorsal anterior surface of propodeum dull, rugose ( Figs 3 View FIGURE 3 B, 4B)................................................3
3. Dorsal surface of propodeum with median depression situated at border between anterior and posterior surface ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 C)................................................................................. Embolemus walkeri Richards
- Dorsal surface of propodeum without median depression situated at border between anterior and posterior surface ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 C)................................................................................ Embolemus krombeini Olmi
