Hildenbrandia jigongshanensis F. NAN & S. XIE , sp. nov. ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 )
a–b. Specimens collected in flowing water in Jigongshan Mountain, China; Crustose thalli growing epilithic on the surface of rocks; c–e. Vegetative structure of H. jigongshanensis , with the transversal section presented as e;
Etymology: — The species epithet refers to the Holotype locality (Jigongshan Mountain, China).
Diagnosis: — Freshwater alga, crimson red, forming thin crustose thalli on the surface of rocks in rapidly flowing water and more or less regularly circular discs, attaining diameter about 50–200 mm ( Fig. 1a and b View FIGURE 1 ). This species is delineated by larger cell size of (9.8–19.6) × (9.9–10.4) μm, and filament height (364–409 μm).
Type: — CHINA, Henan Province, Jigongshan Moutain (31.80N, 114.07E): on the surface of stones in flowing water, 28 July 2015, Fang-Ru Nan, Chao-Yan Gong, Hang Su , Jia Feng and Shu-Lian Xie (Holotype: SXU- HN15006 ; Paratype: HN15007 ). It is deposited in Herbarium of Shanxi University ( SXU), Shanxi University , Taiyuan , Shanxi Province, China GoogleMaps .
According to the morphological description in previous literature ( Nichols 1965, Sherwood and Sheath 2000), the vegetative structures are identified and illustrated ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ). Thallus is composed of a single basal layer and vertical files of cells, and reproduces by gemmae or vegetative production including fragmentation and stolons. Central regions of the thallus become polystromatic and denser colored while margins remain monostromatic and become colorless as the thallus ages. So far, the species has been found only in Jigongshan Mountain, China. It grows tightly on the surface of rocks in flowing water.
Authentic strain: — SXU- HN15006.
