Antenna with 11–21 flagellomeres, apical flagellomere without a spine. Toruli protruding as much as width of scape, anterior margin raised in one or two sharp points. Maxillary and labial palpi with, respectively, 4 and 1 segments. Face wider than clypeus. Median frontal carina often extending to median ocellus. Vertex flattened, without groove medially or shallowly depressed. Anterior ocellus usually at same level as posterior ones. Occipital carina present, interrupted medio-dorsally, ventrally straight and joining hypostomal carina. Mandible robust, nearly as broad basally as apically, lower tooth medium or small but distinct. Subocular sulcus absent. Prepectal carina present. Mesopleuron smooth to partly rugose. Forewing with Rs+M, r-m and R1 absent, 2/ Cu and 3/Cu at the same level. Hind wing with A absent, 2/Sc+R short to medium sized. Dorsope absent. Ovipositor straight or slightly sinuated apically, at most somewhat wavy.

Cosmophorus spp. are parasitoids of adults barkboring and woodboring Scolytidae and Curculionidae (Coleoptera) . This is a small genus of about 30 species, worldwide distributed but not reported to date from South America.
