Discussion. Gryllotalpa hirsuta , along with its synonyms, is in need of modern re-examination and redescription. Gryllotalpa siamensis Giebel, 1870 was noted as a junior synonym of Gryllotalpa hirsuta by Henri de Saussure (1877) (Eades et al., 2013). The remarks are however vague and differences in their genitalia were not provided. Here, photographs of three male specimens from DORSA were examined: two labelled Gryllotalpa hirsuta (AGryhirS01 and BG00071S01) and one labelled Gryllotalpa siamensis (AGrysiaS01) ( Figs. 5 View FIGURE 5 & 6 View FIGURE 6 ). Male tegmina appear similar ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 ). It was also mentioned in Saussure (1877) that Gryllotalpa hirsuta has shorter wings (tegmina?), “les ailes (élytres?)”, than Gryllotalpa siamensis but photographs from DORSA do not show any clear differences ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 ). Gryllotalpa longipennis Saussure, 1877 was redescribed by Saussure (1877). Subsequently, it is placed as a subspecies ( Gryllotalpa hirsuta longipennis Chopard, 1931 ) without further discussion (Chopard, 1931). Hence, no conclusion may be made to affirm if these synonyms are truly distinct species until a reexamination of the types. Whenever possible, acoustic analysis may help solve this taxonomic problem.

Based on the photographs from DORSA, a modern redescription of the male tegminal venation and genitalia of Gryllotalpa hirsuta is provided in Table 1 View TABLE 1 . Comparison with Gryllotalpa fraser sp. n. and Gryllotalpa nymphicus indicates that the three species are distinct ( Table 1 View TABLE 1 ).
