Material examined. All from the continental slope off the Atlantic coast of south-eastern Brazil, Campos Basin; 22 specimens.

Diagnosis. Rostrum pointed; pleonite epimera rounded; antennule outer flagellum with five articles; antenna with ten articles; mandible palp article 2 with three serrate setae, setiferous lobe with four setae; maxillule palp with four distal setae; pereopod 1 carpus with three spiniform setae, distoventral with one aesthetasc and three simple setae; pereopod 4 propodus with three slender ventral spiniform setae; pereopods 5 and 6 unguis ventral margin with acute denticles.
Description of female. Body (Fig. 1A–B) 5.4 mm long, semi-cylindrical, dorsoventrally flattened, six times as long as the width of cephalothorax. Ocular lobes present, without ommatidea or pigmented elements. Cephalothorax as long as wide, about 0.19 times total body length, carapace without setae.
Pereon about 2.8 times as long as the cephalothorax length; six free pereonites, sixth shortest, pereonite 4 and 5 longest.
Pleon about 0.3 times total body length. Pleonites all wider than long, with rounded epimera and pleopods. Pleotelson longer than wide, with two setae at tip.
Antennule (Fig. 1C, C.1) article 1 four times as long as broad, with five simple and two broom setae on outer margin, three simple setae on inner margin; article 2 1.3 times as long as broad with two simple setae on inner margin, one simple and one broom setae on outer margin; article 3 broader than long with setae on each margin distally; article 4 without seta; inner flagellum with last article bearing three setae terminally; outer flagellum five–articled, article 4 with one aesthetasc and three simple setae; last article bearing three setae terminally.
Antenna (Fig. 1D, D.1) article 1 tumid, with part of surface ridged (Fig. 1D.1); article 2 slender and twice as long as the first, pseudosquama with one long simple seta; segment 3 short and naked; article 4 thinner and longer than the second, with four broom and two simple setae; following articles thinner, decreasing width towards the last article; article 5 naked; articles 6 to 9 bearing two setae distally; article 10 with three terminal setae.
Labrum (Fig. 1E) with setules on both lateral margins.
Mandible (Fig. 1F–G) molar and incisor with irregular cutting edge, palp tri-articulate, article 2 with three serrate setae sub-terminally and article 3 with row of minute and finely serrate setae; right mandible (Fig. 1F) setiferous lobe with four truncate setae, left mandible (Fig. 1G) lacinia mobilis (Fig. 1G) with four prominent teeth.
Labium (Fig. 1H) labial process with setules, bifid at tip.
Maxillule (Fig. 1I) outer endite with eleven terminal setae; inner endite with four pinnate setae; with setules on outer margin of both endites; palp having distal article armed with one terminal and three subterminal “harpoontipped” setae.
Epignath (Fig. 1J) margins, lobes and terminal seta naked.
Maxilla ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 A) fixed endite inner lobe armed with a row of curved simple setae; outer lobe with four trifurcate and two simple setae; movable endite inner lobe with four, basally–inflated setae, outer with six long simple setae. Both margins setulate distally.
Maxilliped ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 B) coxa narrow, basis outer margin with six setulated spiniform setae; endite ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 B.1) with three coupling hooks, six plumose setae on inner margin, four circumplumose setae subterminal, two truncate setae terminally; palp 4–articulate, article 1 as long as broad with one simple seta on each margin; article 2 with one seta on outer and nine–ten setae on inner margin; articles 3 and 4 each with seven simple setae on inner margin.
Cheliped ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 C) basis with two short setae ventrally, exopod three-articled with four long terminal plumose setae; merus with two distoventral simple seta; carpus longer than merus with four ventral simple setae; fixed finger of propodus with four ventral and three dorsal simple setae on lateral surface, one simple seta distal on mesial surface; articulation of dactylus with one simple seta on lateral and three on mesial surface; dactylus with a clump of three simple setae on mesial surface. Teeth on grasping and/or cutting edges of fixed finger and dactylus as figured.
Pereopod 1 ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 D) basis almost 1.9 times as long as merus, with two short simple distoventral setae; exopod with four terminal short plumose setae; ischium with one distoventral seta; merus with five simple setae on ventral surface and three simple setae distolaterally; carpus as long as merus, with three spiniform setae distoventral and one distomesially, a row of five simple setae on mesial surface; propodus with four spiniform setae on ventral surface, dorsal surface with three simple setae and two spiniform setae distomesially; dactylus shorter than propodus, with two spines on ventral margin.
Pereopod 2 ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 E, E.1) basis shorter than merus, carpus and propodus combined, with two short simple setae on ventral surface; ischium with one ventral seta; merus with three distoventral and one distodorsal setae; carpus with seven simple setae on both ventral and mesial surfaces, propodus ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 E.1) with eight ventral and five mesial simple setae; dactylus and propodus of equal length, with small seta; unguis finely serrate on ventral margin.
Pereopod 3 ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 F, F.1) similar to pereopod 2 but basis as long as merus, carpus and propodus combined, with a minute simple seta at proximal half of both dorsal and ventral surfaces, one short distoventral simple seta; merus with two simple setae on ventral surface and one subterminal simple setae on lateral surface; carpus with six simple setae on ventral surface and four simple setae distolateral; propodus ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 F.1) with six simple setae on ventral surface, five simple setae distomesial and one simple seta distodorsal; dactylus and unguis combined 0.9 times as long as propodus, with one small ventrodistal seta near unguis.
Pereopod 4 ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 A, A.1) basis about as long as merus, carpus and propodus combined, with one broom seta on both dorsal and ventral surfaces, one simple seta distoventrally; ischium as in pereopod 3; merus with one distoventral seta; carpus longer than merus or propodus, with three spiniform setae on ventral surface, four spiniform setae sub-terminally on lateral surface; propodus ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 A.1) with one broom seta mid–dorsally, three spiniform setae on ventral surface and crown of finely denticulate setae terminally; dactylus plus unguis shorter than propodus, one tiny simple seta near unguis attachment, unguis not serrate on ventral margin.
Pereopod 5 ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 B, B.1–3) basis with small simple seta distoventrally, 1.2 times as long as merus, carpus and propodus combined; ischium as in pereopod 3; merus with one simple distal seta on both dorsal and ventral margins; carpus with five spiniform setae on ventral surface, two spiniform setae sub-terminally on lateral surface; propodus with two small simple and one serrate setae on dorsal surface, five spiniform setae on ventral surface, three rows of five or six serrate setae on lateral surface; dactylus and unguis combined as long as propodus with one ventrodistal seta; unguis ventral margin finely serrate.
Pereopod 6 ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 C, C.1) basis about 1.15 times as long as merus, carpus and propodus combined, with one tiny simple seta proximoventrally; ischium and merus as pereopod 5; carpus with one simple seta distolaterally, six simple setae ventrolaterally; propodus with two spiniform setae on ventral surface, three spiniform setae distomesially, three rows of three or four serrate setae on lateral surface; dactylus and unguis combined 0.7 times as long as propodus with one ventrodistal seta; unguis ventral margin finely serrate.
Pleopod ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 D) basal article with one plumose seta distally; endopod with one plumose seta medially, eight unequal long plumose distal setae; exopod biarticulate, article 1 with one and article 2 with eight unequal plumose distal setae.
Uropod ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 E) basis 2.5 times as long as wide, with one simple seta on inner margin; exopod tri-articulate, two long simple setae distally; endopod of eleven articles.
Sexual dimorphism. Male, 5.2mm long, MZUSP31458 ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 ). Antennule ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 B) and antenna ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 C) with one article more than the female; antennule with rows of aesthetascs on articles 1–4 of flagellum, last two distal articles just with simple setae, two at tip. Cheliped ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 D) greater than the female, basis 1.5 times as long as wide; carpus quadrangular with four spinulate lobes on ventral margin with one simple seta between each one; fixed finger of propodus with five ventral and three dorsal simple setae on lateral surface near unguis; articulation of dactylus with a gap bearing three simple seta; one ornamented teeth on grasping and/or cutting edges of fixed finger and dactylus as figured.
Other stages. Manca with six–articled exopods found on pereopods 4 and 5, first article as long as the following combined ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 F–G).
Etymology. The new species is named in honour of Ana Falcão, master researcher of the HABITATS Project.
Type-locality. Campos Basin, 21°47' 22.36"S – 40°02' 19.53" W, 758 m.
Geographic d istribution. Slope of the Atlantic coast off south-eastern Brazil, Campos Basin, 680–758 m depth.
Remarks. Kudinopasternakia falconae n. sp. shares several characters with almost all species of the genus: (i) rostrum pointed; (ii) pleonites with rounded epimera; (iii) basal article of the pleopod with one plumose seta; (iv) absence of thick lobate setae on distodorsal margin of pereopod 4 propodus. The species without this combination of features are: K. amazonica (rostrum rounded); K. serejae n.sp. (basal article of pleopod naked); K. dispar , K. larisae and K. trispinosa (pleonites with pointed epimera); K. amazonica , K. bispinosa and K. trispinosa (thick lobate setae present on pereopod 4 propodus).
Kudinopasternakia falconae n.sp. differs from K. balanorostrata , K. bispinosa , K. brasiliensis , K. dispar and K. siegi in having ten articles on the antenna (versus nine); the ventral margin of pereopod 6 unguis is serrate (versus smooth, without ornamentation). The new species differs from K. trispinosa in that the outer margin of antennule has three articles (versus four); the ventral margin of pereopod 1 propodus has four spiniform setae (instead of three); the ventral margin of pereopod 4 propodus has three spiniform setae (versus four).
