Eumorpha analis View in CoL View at ENA ( Rothschild & Jordan, 1903)
Pholus analis Rothschild & Jordan, 1903
Pholus satellitia rosea Brou, 1980
Type locality: Paraguay
( Figs 8a–j View FIGURE 8 , 9a–t View FIGURE 9 )
Characterization. Wingspan is from 9.28 to 11.87 cm, the length of the forewing ranges from 4.37 to 5.34 cm, and the hindwing ranges from 2.60 to 3.11 cm.
Head: grayish, median dark band, brown palpi with the white distal region.
Thorax: grayish, tegulae in dark brown triangular shape, dark brown median band.
Forewing: dorsal striated view, discal bar shaded at the top, leaving the base and extending to the half of the wing; discal band modified in two wavy dark brown discal stripes coming out of the outer margin next to the discal spot, "Y" spot coming out of the costal margin diagonally to the outer margin separated from the darker apical margin; the presence of two dark spots in the post-discal area and close to the "Y" spot; dark brown semilunar subapical patch; triangular spot on the inner margin without outline, the submarginal band almost imperceptible, ventral view: predominantly light brown, spot varying from light brown to beige, not uniform, going from the apex through the external margin ending at the meeting with the internal margin, having a triangular projection towards the submarginal area in the middle of the external margin followed by smaller undulations, two striations going from the internal margin to the costal margin dividing the post-discal area from the submarginal area.
Hindwing: dorsal view: discal spot extends to the apical area, outer margin with a lighter region having two dark spots, ventral view: predominantly brown, with a greenish spot that extends from the base, passing through the inner margin ending at the anal angle, two striations that go from the inner margin to the costal margin, one separating the discal area from the post-discal area and the other separating the post-discal area from the submarginal area.
Abdomen: in the dorsal view, covered predominantly with brown scales, the first segment with a dark spot, and other segments with a pair of darker spots in the shape of an inverted triangle; in the ventral view, it is covered predominantly with light brown scales.
Male genitalia: Uncus single sickle-shaped. Valva equal in width, apex rounded. Sacculus, measuring approximately half the size of the valva, with a slightly rounded base. The saccular process is uniform width, and sclerotization start from the base to the tip that faces outwards. Sac projected and oval shape. The a e deagus, uniform tubular shape, with pointed projection at the apex.
Diagnosis.
Habitus. similar to E. megaeacus , Eumorpha aff. analis (a) and Eumorpha aff. analis (b). It differs from E. megaeacus by the few striations on the forewing, and hindwing with two dark spots close to the outer margin while E. megaeacus has two bands that appear at the base of the wing extending to the apex ( Figs 8i–j View FIGURE 8 ). Genitalia in E. analis are with a saccular process ends with a sickle-shaped fold ( Fig 9s View FIGURE 9 ), however in Eumorpha aff. analis (a) and Eumorpha aff. analis (b) the main difference is in the genitalia, by the presence of an external projection, near the apex of the saccular process. In Eumorpha aff. analis (a) the projection is more sinuous ( Fig. 9g View FIGURE 9 ), while in Eumorpha aff. analis (b) it is less sinuous ( Figs 9k, 9o View FIGURE 9 ).
