Distribution ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 ). This species occurs in Central, Southern and Western Europe, in the Iberian Peninsula (Tierno de Figueroa et al. 2005) and North Africa ( Consiglio 1980, Sánchez-Ortega et al. 2003, Tierno de Figueroa et al. 2003). It was reported from Algeria ( Lestage 1925) and Moroccan High Atlas ( Aubert 1956, 1961, Meinander 1967, Miron 1972, Ajakane 1988, Bouzidi 1989, Badri 1993, and Bouzidi & Giudicelli 1994).
Ecology. A fluvial species typical of large rivers ( Aubert 1959, Consiglio 1979, 1980) but also present in smaller permanent rivers and streams with stony substrate ( Hynes 1941, 1976). The larva is a nocturnal predator ( Elliott 2003, 2004). Adults emerge in spring ( Aubert 1959, 1963a, Berthélemy 1966). This is a very rare species that has been listed as endangered in wide parts of its range ( Zwick 1984a).
