Pterygosoma benguellae Jack, 1962 ( Figs 41–43 View FIGURE 41 View FIGURE 42 View FIGURE 43 )

Pterygosoma benguellae Jack, 1962: 270 , fig. 7

Type host: Agama anchietae (Sauria: Agamidae ). Type locality: Angola (Benguela).

Redescription. FEMALE (based on 6 paratypes from Agama anchietae ). Gnathosoma . Chelicerae 105–120 long; basal swollen part 55–65 long, slender distal part 45–65 long. Fixed cheliceral digit elongated, about 30 long. Setae dF and dG 40–65 and 30–40 long, respectively. Palpal tibia with small claw; palpal tarsi with 3 setae. Subcapitular setae n smooth, 20–35 long. Hypostome 100–110 long, with small depression present at apex (in 2 paratypes apex is flattened). Peritremes 120–170 long. Idiosoma 455–575 long and 930–1170 wide. Dorsum. Anterior part with about 70 pairs of serrate setae, 30–50 long, dorso-median part with 2 pairs of setae dm1 and dm2. Setae dm1 slightly serrate, 45–50 long, setae dm2 paddle-shaped, 65–80 long. Lateral parts with 9–13 pairs of paddle-shaped setae, 50–125 long; posterior part with 34–40 pairs of setae of two types: 18–26 pairs of paddle-shaped setae situated medially, 120–150 long, and 11–16 pairs of smooth setae, 225–315 long, situated laterally. Eyes present. Venter. Setae vm1 filiform, setae vm2 and vm3 thicker than vm1 and with barely discernible serration. Genital slit situated mainly ventrally. Genital series represented by 1 pair of spine-like setae g1, 50–55 long. Setae ps1 and ps2 paddle-shaped, 70–120 long, situated terminally; setae ps3 and ps4 45–65 long and situated dorsally. Legs as in agamae group i. e. setae of trochanters I–IV (1–1–1–1), femora I–IV (3–1–1–1), genua I–IV (2–1–1–1), tibiae I–IV (5–3–3–3). All setae on each podomere filiform, except for thick and serrate setae dFI–IV and slightly serrate setae dTiII–IV. Setation of tarsi I–IV as in group B: I 12 setae (ft, tc’, tc”, p’, p”, a’, a”, it’, it”, u’, u”, vs’) and solenidion ω1; II 8 setae (tc’, p’, p”, a’, a”, u’, u”, vs’) and ω1; III and IV with 8 setae each (tc’, p’, p”, a’, a”, u’, u”, vs’). Setae tc’ of legs II–IV and a’, a”, u’, u”, vs’ of legs I–IV smooth.

MALE. Unknown.

Type material (examined). Six female paratypes ( NHM no.1966.2.22.74–83) from Agama anchietae Bocage (Sauria: Agamidae ) ( NHM no. 1906.8.24 –25), ANGOLA: Benguela, 24–25 August 1906, coll. W. J. Ansorge.

Type material deposition. All type material deposited in the NHM (the holotype is lost, J. Beccaloni, personal communication) .

Host and distribution. This species was recorded from Agama anchietae from Angola [Benguela, Huxe Sierra] and Agama aculeatum (locality unknown) ( Lawrence 1936).

Remarks. This study shows that in P. benguellae leg setae vGI are absent and setae vGIII are present vs. presence of setae vGI and absence of vGIII according to Jack (1964).
