Heterolinus puncticeps (GuérinMenéville, 1844) View in CoL

Xantholinus puncticeps GuérinMéneville 1844:11 View in CoL .

Heterolinus puncticeps View in CoL ; Sharp 1885:475.

Remarks. This species is very similar to H. basiniger , and can be distinguished as commented in remarks about the latter. Sharp (1885) misidentified one specimen from Costa Rica figured in the Biologia CentraliAmericana, as H. puncticeps (now the holotype of the new species). He commented that the specimen was a large form of the Colombian one, but it belongs to H. basiniger , that is in general larger. The specimen of the GuérinMéneville collection indicated as a holotype is a syntype of Xantholinus puncticeps , because no type was designated in the original paper.

Geographical Distribution. Known from Colombia (type locality) and Ecuador (new record) ( Fig. 19 View Fig ) .

Heterolinus xanthogaster (Solsky 1875) new combination Fig. 1 View Figs

Xantholinus xanthogaster Solsky 1875:19 .

Heterolinus distinctus Bernhauer 1905:17 View in CoL , new synonymy.

Remarks. Heterolinus xanthogaster is easily distinguished from the other two species by the red abdomen and rufotestaceous antennae and legs. It is particularly very similar to H. puncticeps , except for the pronotal punctation and color pattern; other characters are the same, including the aedeagus. Bernhauer’s description of H. distinctus (1905) is shorter than Solsky’s description (1875) of H. xanthogaster (as Xantholinus ), but the mentioned characters are the same. Bernhauer did not know X. xanthogaster and now I have examined a specimen from Fauvel collection indicated as ‘‘syntype’’ of this species. At present, Solsky’s collection is considered to be mostly lost, but the label information of the specimen indicated as syntype agrees with the original locality mentioned in Solsky’s description; it is pertinent to establish H. distinctus as a synonym of H. xanthogaster and to designate a lectotype for Xantholinus xanthogaster Solsky.
