Differential diagnosis
Sphegina (Asiosphegina) amamiensis is strikingly different from all other species studied here due to the wide bifid lobe on the male sternum IV which is situated on the right side, in all other species having a similar lobe it is situated on the left. Furthermore, it is characterized by the following: frontal prominence short; face black; mouth edge dark brown; basoflagellomere oval, arista short pilose; scutum with pollinose pattern; scutellum with setae rather long and closely set; vein dm-cu slightly oblique; pro- and mesotarsus with tarsomeres 4 and 5 black; metafemur black and yellow biannulate; tergum I with an oblique row of light yellow setae at lateral margin; tergum III with red-brown fascia on anterior ½; sternum IV posteriorly on the right side with a large subtriangular lobe having a widely bilobed apex.
