Diagnosis. Bothriomiris lugubris can be recognized by the following set of features: body larger than 5.5 mm; dorsum dark brown, nearly black; antennal segment I shorter than width of vertex ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 18 ); vertex with two weakly convex tubercles, each situated laterally and almost contiguous with inner margin of eye; anterior lobe of pronotum finely and sparsely punctate; scutellum almost entirely dark brown, with pale yellow to brownish patch apically; left paramere convex, with a sensory lobe furnished with distinct spine (see Gorczyca 2005: Fig. 6 View FIGURES 1 – 18 ).

Most similar to B. sulawesicus in having similar dorsal coloration and left paramere with convex sensory lobe. B. lugubris can, however, be easily distinguished from this species by the tubercles on the vertex being less pronounced, the antennal segment I shorter than width of the vertex, the punctured pronotal calli, the scutellum varying from blackish dark brown to almost black with an apex yellowish to brownish, and the left paramere with sensory lobe furnished with sharply pointed process.

Redescription. Female. COLORATION ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 18 ). Dorsal surface blackish dark brown to almost black, with small yellowish and/or brownish areas. Head. Blackish dark brown; frons with two indistinct, brownish patches laterally, each contiguous with inner margin of eye; antennal segments I and II dark brown; segment I weakly tinged with dull yellow basally; segments III and IV varying from yellowish brown to brownish; labium blackish dark brown. Thorax. Pronotum. Entirely blackish dark brown to almost black. Scutellum. Varying from blackish dark brown to almost black, apex with small patch varying from yellowish to brownish. Thoracic pleura. Mostly blackish; proepisternum dull yellowish; proepimeron with dull yellowish patch anteriorly; evaporative areas fuscous posteriorly, reddish anteriorly; peritreme reddish. Hemelytron. Blackish dark brown; corium with more or less distinctly developed, yellowish or dirty yellow transverse stripe subapically; cuneus with small, yellowish or dull yellowish patch apically; membrane fuscous with pale gray patches: one situated laterally, contiguous with margin of cuneus and other situated medially, contiguous with major cell, sometimes spreading onto inner margin of membrane, rarely membrane entirely brown; veins mostly yellowish. Legs. Procoxa with basal half dull yellowish, remainder of procoxa dark brown; meso- and metacoxae dull yellowish at basal two-thirds, apical one-third dark brown; profemur entirely dark brown; mesofemur dark brown, dull yellow basally; metafemur reddish with large, pale patch medially and with pale apex; pro- and mesotibiae dark brown with distinct, yellowish annulation apically; tarsus brown. Abdomen. Blackish dark brown, tinged with red. STRUCTURE AND VESTITURE ( Figs. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 18 ). Dorsum covered with relatively long, dense, semirecumbent setae. Head. Rugose, with setae similar to those on dorsum, but more irregularly distributed; vertex with two indistinct tubercles, each situated laterally and contiguous with inner margin of eye; antennal segment I narrowed basally, weakly thickened toward apex, covered with moderately dense, semirecumbent setae; segment II almost cylindrical, with moderately dense, relatively long, semirecumbent setae and with several semirecumbent, long, bristlelike setae; labium stout, apex barely reaching beyond procoxae. Thorax. Pronotum. Pronotal calli broad, occupying whole anterior lobe, moderately convex, with punctures smaller and sparser than those on remainder of pronotum and with cross-shaped incision medially; posterior lobe of pronotum uniformly punctate, without any swellings medially. Scutellum. Moderately arched. Thoracic pleura. Covered with relatively long, dense, semirecumbent setae; proepisternum punctate, anterior portion of proepimeron and mesepimeron inpunctate, remaining pleura deeply and densely punctate; metepisternum with dorsal and anterior margins covered with minute, very dense setae; peritreme obtuse, covered with microtrichae. Hemelytron. Vein R + M somewhat convex in basal half; membrane with major cell rounded apically, minor cell well visible. Legs. Short, covered with moderately dense setae; tarsus with tarsomere II divided medially; pretarsal claw toothed subapically.

Male. Similar to female in coloration, structure and vestiture, but more slender in width.

Male genitalia. Parameres as depicted by Gorczyca (2005: Figs. 5–6 View FIGURES 1 – 18 ). Aedeagus not studied.

Measurements. Ƥ / 3 (n=3; lectotype measurements in parentheses): body length 6.85–7.1/5.60 (6.85), width 3.0–3.12/2.60 (3.12). Head. Length 0.55–0.57/0.36 (0.57), width 1.65–1.70/1.52 (1.70), diameter of eye in dorsal view 0.37–0.40/0.32 (0.37). Antenna. Length of segment I 0.90–0.95/0.84 (0.95), II 1.75–1.77/1.76 (1.77), III 1.0/ 0.88 (1.0), IV 0.62 (0.62) (broken in male). Length of labium 2.0 (immeasurable in male). Pronotum. Length 1.75–1.80/1.40 (1.80), width of anterior margin 1.25–1.30/1.20 (1.30), length of lateral margin 1.42–1.50/1.20 (1.42), width of posterior margin 2.70–2.80/2.60 (2.80).

Distribution ( Fig. 19 View FIGURE 19 ). Taiwan.

Remarks. Yasunaga (2000) and Gorczyca (2005, 2006) believed that the description of B. lugubris given by Carvalho & Lorenzato (1978) refers to an other, not yet described species of Bothriomirini. After examination of whole type series of this species we confirm Yasunaga and Gorczycas’ suggestions.
