Genus Carineta Amyot & Audinet-Serville, 1843 View in CoL
Carineta Amyot & Audinet-Serville 1843: 482 View in CoL .
Type species. Cicada formosa Germar 1830: 45 View in CoL ( Brazil) .
Diagnosis. Characteristics of the genus include a head narrower than the mesonotum, a frons as long as or slightly longer than the vertex, a pronotum that is considerably shorter than the mesonotum, and the fore wing width about one-third the fore wing length ( Distant 1906). It is the New World genus with the greatest known alpha diversity that continues to increase with recent studies ( Sanborn 2018; 2019a, b; 2020a, b, c, e). The genus is in need of a comprehensive review. With the reassignment of the Martinique species to the genus Herrera Distant, 1905b below, the genus is currently only represented in Trinidad within the Lesser Antilles ( Sanborn 2020a).
