Material in MHNG, Lamarck collection: Rosalie de Lamarck’s notes indicate that there was originally one specimen of this Linnaean species in her father’s collection. This specimen, which was said to measure 2 pouces 7 lignes (= about 69 mm.), has not been located. The collection previously contained a specimen measuring 99 mm that did not match Lamarck’s description and was removed by G. Mermod. There is currently no Lamarckian material of this species held by MHNG.

Current taxonomic position: Neptunea contraria ( Linnaeus, 1771) ; placed in Neptunea [ Buccinidae ] by Nyst (1845): 499. Locality is Bay of Biscay to Morocco. Lamarck recognized the priority of Linnaeus’ name.
