Dryopteris wallichiana (Spreng.) Hyl., Bot. Not. 1953: 352 View in CoL . 1953.
Range: —Greater Antilles; mountains from Mexico to central Argentina; central and eastern Brazil; mountains of Africa; Himalayas to China and Japan; Hawaii. In Bolivia, known from CH, CO, LP, SC, and TA.
Ecology: —Common; a characteristic terrestrial species of humid montane forests, timberline habitats, thickets, and grasslands; (1000–) 1500–4000 m.
Notes: —At least some populations of Dryopteris wallichiana comprise apogamous triploids ( Manton & Sledge 1954). For a discussion of the complex nomenclature of this pantropical species, see Smith & Fraser-Jenkins (1982). Despite their geographic disjunction, American and Old World specimens of this species appear similar and are treated here as conspecific.
