Range: — Colombia and Venezuela to Bolivia ( CH, CO, LP, TA, SC), Argentina, and Brazil; islands of the mid- Atlantic Ocean; Africa; Madagascar and islands of the Indian Ocean.

Ecology: —Common; epiphytic, terrestrial, and saxicolous, often on rock faces in ravines and on rock walls, less commonly on grassy slopes or in humid forests; (700–) 1600–3700 m.

Notes: — Elaphoglossum hybridum is the most widely distributed species of sect. Polytrichia , being the only representative of this section outside the Neotropics. The morphological variation found across its range is perplexing, even within small populations. Diminutive fertile specimens, as in the holotype of Acrostichum hybridum var. vulcanii (Lepervanche-Mézières s.n., P00466255), are common throughout the range, but there is usually a complete series of intermediates between smaller and larger plants at the same locality ( Matos & Mickel 2014, Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ). Juvenile individuals may have conspicuous hydathodes on their sterile leaves, but field observations indicate that these structures disappear with age. Larger plants grade into E. barbatum and E. erinaceum (see comments under E. barbatum ).

Lewis 881732 (MEXU, MO, UC), cited by Rojas-Alvarado (2010) as a new record of E. baquianorum A.Rojas for Bolivia, is here identified as this species.
