Range: —Southern Mexico; Costa Rica and Panama; Bolivia (CO, LP).
Ecology: —Local and uncommon; terrestrial in humid forests and semihumid Podocarpus forests; 2800–3100 m.
Notes: —Along with P. hartwegii , as well as other extraterritorial species, part of a complex of species centered in southern Mexico and Mesoamerica.
Names of Uncertain Status
Polystichum boboense Hieron. var. minor Hieron., Hedwigia 46: 358, t. 8, f. 26. 1907. Syntypes:— La Paz, near Tiahuánaco, above 4000 m, Stübel 1243 (B). The other syntype, Stübel 353 p. p. (isosyntype US) is from Ecuador; needs lectotypification. Status: uncertain.
Polystichum wolfii Hieron., Hedwigia View in CoL 46: 356. 1907. Type:— La Paz, Copacabana at lacum Titicaca, January 1877, Stübel 1245 (holotype?). It is possible that this name is a synonym of P. nudicaule Rosenst. View in CoL ; if so, P. wolfii View in CoL is the older name and has priority.
