= Polystichum pflanzii Hieron., Bot. Jahrb. Syst. View in CoL 43: 179. 1913 (lectotypification needed).
= Polystichum pycnolepis (Klotzsch) T.Moore sensu Tryon & Stolze (1991) View in CoL .
Range: —Andes from Venezuela to Bolivia ( CH, CO, LP).
Ecology: —Common; terrestrial in open, rocky hillsides, in rock crevices, at the edge of large rocks, and in grassy or shrubby slopes; (1700–) 3000–4600 m.
Notes: —Because the pinnule margins are most strongly revolute in their middle, the pinnules appear sharply triangular. There are morphologically intermediate specimens with P. lehmannii , P. nudicaule , and P. orbiculatum , indicating possible hybridization. These putative hybrids resemble their suspected parents but have the large, dark, involute scales and thick pinnule texture of P. cochleatum .
