Polystichum nudicaule Rosenst., Repert. View in CoL Spec. Nov. Regni Veg. 11: 56. 1912.
= Polystichum montevidense (Spreng.) Rosenst. var. nudicaule (Rosenst.) R.M.Tryon, Fieldiana, Bot. View in CoL , n.s. 27: 52. 1991.
Range: — Colombia to Bolivia ( CH, CO, LP, PO, TA); perhaps also further north in the Andes.
Ecology: —Common; terrestrial, in rock crevices, on stone walls, and in boggy places in scrub, 1800–4000 m.
Notes: —The rhizome scales are usually black (vs. castaneous in P. montevidense ) and only rarely medium to dark brown. The leaves are often folded longitudinally. Generally, this species has smaller leaves than congeners in Bolivia. McHenry & Barrington (2014) included a specimen from Bolivia in their analysis. See comments under P. wolfii Hieron. , an older and possibly synonymous name, under Names of Uncertain Status.
