Elaphoglossum zebrinum Mickel, Fieldiana, Bot. View in CoL , n.s., 27: 165. 1991. ( Fig. 38A–F View FIGURE 38 )

Range: — Colombia to Bolivia (CO).

Ecology: —Rare; epiphytic in humid forests; 300–1000 m.

Notes: —This species is named for its zebra-like white stripes between the veins. In Bolivia, it is known only from two relatively recent collections: Kessler 8489 (LPB, UC) and Weigelt 90210 (LPB, TUR).

Sect. Squamipedia Mickel & Atehortúa, Amer. Fern J. 70(2): 59. 1980.

Most species in this small section are readily recognized by slender, 1–1.5 mm thick, long-creeping rhizomes; the presence of two aerophores on the rhizomes just behind each petiole (the aerophores are often hidden by scales); pale brown rhizome scales; the absence of hydathodes and phyllopodia; and echinulate spores. One atypical species in this group is E. nidiforme , thought to belong here on molecular grounds. Unlike other species of the section, it is large, with compact rhizomes and nest-forming leaves. We treat the species here, but it is also keyed in section Elaphoglossum . Section Squamipedia is believed to be monophyletic ( Rouhan et al. 2004, Skog et al. 2004, Vasco et al. 2015). Two of the Bolivian species have divided blades and have been previously separated as Peltapteris (e.g., Mickel 1991). Except for blade division, they are similar in every aspect to the other species in the section and have been found, based on molecular evidence, to be nested within sect. Squamipedia ( Vasco et al. 2015). The section was recently monographed by Vasco et al. (2013), and we follow that treatment.
