Macrophiothrix hirsuta ( Müller & Troschel, 1842)
Ophiothrix hirsuta Müller & Troschel, 1842: 111 .
Macrophiothrix hirsuta hirsuta —A. M. Clark 1968: 294–296 , figs 3–5, 7.
Habitat: Pools and under rocks, 3–4 m ( Clark & Bowen 1949; Mortensen 1940).
Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman: Kish Island (7), Chabahar Bay (17), Tarut Bay (25) (ibid.).
Indian Ocean: Indian Ocean ( Clark & Taylor 1971).
Remarks: It is unclear whether these records refer to the subspecies M. hirsuta hirsuta or to M. hirsuta cheneyi , because none of the authors considered Ophiothrix cheneyi Lyman, 1861 in their comments. The subspecific separation and inclusion of O. cheneyi in Macrophiothrix was proposed by A. M. Clark (1968), but she continued to refer to M. hirsuta without subspecific distinction ( Clark & Taylor 1971; Clark & Rowe 1971).
