M a t e r i a l. Oriolo MSF 982, 984.

D e s c r i p t i o n. Cupule, diameter 22–27 mm, oblong to spathulate scales, reflexed, ca. 2–3 mm long.

R e m a r k s. The cupules resemble those of modern Quercus sect. Cerris by their reflexed scales. Such scales are also found in some Q. sect. Ilex (e.g., Q. coccifera L., 1753). Cupules in Q. cerris usually have more prominent scales, but they may look similar to the fossils from Oriolo when collected from the leaf litter.
