Brenske (1900) established Orthoserica Brenske (1900: 79) for a genus of beetle within the Scarabaeidae : Sericinae: Sericini: Sericina, albeit without any included species. He later described the African Orthoserica fulvastra Brenske, 1902 , making it the type species by subsequent monotypy. No additional species have been described.
However, the genus Orthoserica had been established by Warren (1896: 113, type species Orthoserica rufigrisea Warren, 1896 , by original designation) for a geometrid moth from “Khasias”, presumably northeastern Bangladesh and nearby India. Warren (1896) placed the genus in the Geometridae : Sterrhinae. A second species, Boarmia mirandaria Leech, 1897 , was transferred to the genus and is currently considered a subspecies of O. rufigrisea (Natural History Museum et al. 2024).
To resolve the homonymy, in accordance with Article 60 of the Code, we propose Ahrenserica Allsopp & Schoolmeesters , replacement name as the replacement name for Orthoserica Brenske nec Warren. This results in a new combination for the species currently included in this genus (see below).
