Brenske (1894) established Holocnemus Brenske (1894: 76) for an Indian scarab beetle Holocnemus tomentosus Brenske, 1894 (type species by monotypy) ( Scarabaeidae : Melolonthinae: Melolonthini). This remains the only described species in the genus.
However, the genus Holocnemus had been established by Simon (1873: 48, type species Holocnemus rivulatus Simon, 1873 (= Aranea pluchei Scopoli, 1763 ), by subsequent designation of Wiehle (1933)) for two species of spiders from the western Mediterranean region (one now widespread). Four species are currently recognised ( Huber 2022) within the Araneae : Pholcidae : Smeringopinae .
To resolve the homonymy, in accordance with Article 60 of the Code, we propose Brenskecnemus Allsopp & Schoolmeesters , replacement name as the replacement name for Holocnemus Brenske nec Simon. This results in a new combination for the species currently included in this genus (see below).
