Leia Meigen 1818: 253 View in CoL . Type-species: Leia fascipennis Meigen View in CoL ( Curtis 1837, pl. 645).

LEJA, error.

LIA, error.

GLAPHYOPTERA Winnertz 1863: 781 (preocc. Heer 1852). Type-species: Leia fascipennis Meigen ( Coquillett 1910: 547) .

NEOGLAPHYOPTERA Osten-Sacken 1878: 10 (nom. nov. for Glaphyroptera Winnertz ). Type-species: Leia fascipennis Meigen (aut.).

L. amabilis ( Williston) 1900: 219 ( Neoglaphyroptera ). Type-locality: Mexico, Morellos , Cuernavaca, and Vera Cruz, near Medellín. Lectotype ♂, NHM (here designated).

( Figures 74–75 View FIGURES 66–76 )

Notes. The type series included two male and two female syntypes, all of which are at the NHM. Commenting on the type series, Williston (1900: 220) noted that “no two of which agree in all respects, and possibly not belonging to the same species.” The reexamination of the specimens confirms that there are at least three species present in the type series. The labels of the designated male lectotype are as follows: “SYN- / TYPE” [printed in black on a rounded label with light blue border] // “Medellin, / near Vera Cruz. / H. H. S. / Jan. 1888.” “Central America. / Pres. By / P.D. Godman. / O. Salvin. / 1903-172.” // “B.C.A., Dipt. I. / Neoglaphyroptera / amabilis Will. ”. The paralectotypes have the following labels: (1) “SYN- / TYPE” [printed in black on a rounded label with light blue border] // “Orizaba. / H.S. & P.D.G. / Dec. 18[?]7.” // “Central America. / Pres. By / P.D. Godman. / O. Salvin. / 1903-172.” // “ Neoglaphyroptera / amabilis / Will.” (2) “SYN- / TYPE” [printed in black on a rounded label with light blue border] // “Orizaba. / H.S. & P.D.G. / Dec. 18[?]7.” // “Central America. / Pres. By / P.D. Godman. / O. Salvin. / 1903-172.” // “ Neoglaphyroptera / amabilis / Will.” (3) “SYN- / TYPE” [printed in black on a rounded label with light blue border] // “Cuernavaca, / Morelos. / June. H.H.S.” // “B.C.A., Dipt. I. / Neoglaphyroptera / amabilis Will. // “Central America. / Pres. By / P.D. Godman. / O. Salvin. / 1903-172.” // “ Neoglaphyroptera / amabilis / Will. [hw] // BMH(E) # / 254216”. An additional specimen from Guatemala has been identified as L. amabilis by John Lane (in 1952) (male terminalia dissected and mounted between a pair of square microslides // wing mounted between a pair of rounded microslides, a rose square label without writings // “Collection D.G. Eisen // “ Guatemala [pr] / July 1902 ” [hw] // “N. 9887 / S. 613 / T. 6126” // “ Leia amabilis det. John Lane 1952”. One of the paralectotypes seems to be conspecific with the specimen from Guatemala.

L. andirai Lane 1950: 130 View in CoL . Type-locality: Brazil, São Paulo, Campos do Jordão. Holotype ♀, MZUSP.

Notes. The type series included the female holotype and fourteen female paratypes, of which two female paratypes are at the NHM, both from the city of São Paulo, most certainly conspecific with the holotype. The conspecificity of sixteen additional specimens identified by Lane from Nova Teutônia at the NHM is questionable .

L. aruaci Lane 1950: 122 View in CoL , figs 8–11 (♂ terminalia). Type-locality: Brazil, Goiás, Corumbá de Goiás. Holotype ♂, MZUSP.

Notes. The type series included the male holotype, a female allotype, and three male paratypes, of which a single male paratype is at the NHM, from the type-locality .

L. biamputata Edwards 1933: 317 View in CoL . Type-locality: Brazil, Minas Gerais, Araguaí. Holotype ♂, NHM. Revalidated. ( Figure 76 View FIGURES 66–76 )

Notes. The type series included only the male holotype. This species appeared as a questioned synonym of Leia incompleta View in CoL in Papavero (1978: 29) and is herein revalidated. The labels of the holotype are: “Arassuahy / Minas, Thieman // [abdomen and male terminalia dissected and mounted on an acetate sheet] // “HOLO- / TYPE” [printed in black on a rounded label with red border]” // “ Leia View in CoL / biamputata Edw. View in CoL [hw] / F.W. Edwards / det. 1933 [pr]” // “ Brazil: / Th. Borgmeier. / B.M. 1931-577.” // “ HOLOTYPE [pr] / Leia View in CoL / biamputata View in CoL [hw] / det. J.E. Chainey, 1995 [pr]” // “BMNH(E) # / 254207”. The entire abdomen was removed from the holotype and is mounted together with the terminalia; one of the wings is missing.

L. concinna ( Williston) 1896: 259 ( Neoglaphyroptera ). Type-locality: St. Vincent, W.I. Lectotype ♀, NHM (here designated).

( Figure 77 View FIGURES 77–87 )

Notes. The type series included four females syntypes, of which one female and one specimen with the abdomen missing labeled as syntypes are at the NHM. The lectotype labels are: “SYN- / TYPE” [printed in black on a rounded label with light blue border] // “Winward side / St. Vincent, W.I. / H.H. Smith. ” // “ W. Indies. / 1907-66.” / / “ 1500 feet ” // [black, small square label with writings] // “BMNH(E) # / 254211”. The labels of the paralectotype are: “SYN- / TYPE” [printed in black on a rounded label with light blue border] // “Winward side / St. Vincent, W.I. / H.H. Smith. ” // “ W. Indies. / 1907-66.” // “ 1500 feet ” // [black, small square label with writings] // “BMNH(E) # / 254210” / “ Neoglaphyroptera / cracinana ” [sic] / Will. [hw]”, [on the back of a label with red lines at the border, printed “Williston.” at the bottom right and “ Neoglaphyroptera / triangularis ” handwritten]. The lectotype is pretty well preserved, with one of wings glued to the base of the micropin. The paralectotype is deeply damaged, with only a ventral portion of the thorax remaining, to which the mid and hindlegs are attached. Two males from the West Indies collected by H.H. Smith are identified as L. concinna , one of them with a handwriting identification from Williston. They both come from Grenada (Westward side and Leeward side) and seem to be conspecific with the lectotype. Inferences of conspecificity of specimens from Central America localities with the holotype should be considered carefully .

L. dichroma Freeman 1951: 78 View in CoL . Type-locality: Chile, Llanquihue , Puerto Varas. Holotype ♀, NHM.

( Figure 78 View FIGURES 77–87 )

Notes. The type series included the female holotype and one female paratype, both of which are at the NHM. The labels with the holotype are: “HOLO- / TYPE” [printed in black on a rounded label with red border]” // “ Leia / dichroma [hw] / Freeman. / HOLOTYPE ” [printed on red label]” // [female terminalia dissected on an acetate sheet] // “Puerto Varas / 16.xii.1926.” // “South Chile / Llanquihue prov. / F. & M. Edwards / B.M. 1927–63.” // “BMNH(E) # / 254232”. The terminalia of the female holotype is not dissected. The female paratype number is “BMNH(E) # / 254233” .

L. diversipes Edwards 1933: 310 View in CoL . Type-locality: Bolivia, Mapiri, Cordilleras, 4000–5000 m. Ref.— Lane 1959: 187. Holotype ♂, MTD.

( Figure 79 View FIGURES 77–87 )

Notes. The type series included the male holotype (in the MTD), one male paratype and two damaged specimens ,

of which a male paratype from the type-locality, in good condition, is at the NHM .

L. falculata Edwards 1933: 313 View in CoL . Type-locality: Brazil, Paraná, Rio Negro. Holotype ♂, NHM.

( Figure 80 View FIGURES 77–87 )

Notes. The type series included only the male holotype. Two specimens, one labeled as holotype and another with no labels at all are at the NHM. The labels of the holotype are: “ Rio Negro. / Paraná. / 1925” [hw] // “HOLO- / TYPE” [printed in black on a rounded label with red border]” // “ Leia / falculata Edw. [hw] / F.W. Edwards / det. 1933 [pr]” // “ Brazil: / Th. Borgmeier. / B.M. 1931-577.” // “ HOLOTYPE [pr] / Leia / falculata [hw] / det. J.E. Chainey, 1995 [pr]” // “BMNH(E) # / 254217” .

L. fuscicornis Edwards 1941: 309 View in CoL . Type-locality: Brazil, Mato Grosso do Sul, Salobra. Holotype ♀, NHM.

Revalidated.

( Figure 81 View FIGURES 77–87 )

Notes. The type series included the female holotype and one female paratype, of which only the female holotype is at the NHM. The labels of the holotype are as follows: “1.214” // “ M. Grosso / Salobra / vii.1939 / Exp. C. Z. B.” / / “HOLO- / TYPE” [printed in black on a rounded label with red border]” // “ Leia / fuscicornis Edw [hw] / F.W. Edwards 193[pr]9[hw]” // Brazil. / J Lane. BM 1939.636.” [hw] // [male terminalia dissected, mounted on an acetate sheet] // “ HOLOTYPE [pr] / Leia / fuscicornis [hw] / det. J.E. Chainey, 1996 [pr]” // “BMNH(E) # / 254222”. The holotype is in excellent condition .

L. junai Lane 1950: 128 View in CoL . Type-locality: Brazil, São Paulo, Salesópolis, Estação Biológica de Boracéia. Holotype ♀, MZUSP.

Notes. The type series included the female holotype and eighteen female paratypes, of which two female paratypes are at the NHM, both from the type-locality .

L. leucocera Edwards 1933: 311 View in CoL . Type-locality: Bolivia, Mapiri , Sarampiuní, 700 m. Holotype ♂, MTD.

( Figure 82 View FIGURES 77–87 )

Notes. The type series included the male holotype and two female paratypes (one from Bolivia and two from Peru), of which a paratype, from Chanchamago , Peru, is at the NHM. The specimen is in bad condition, the entire abdomen missing and only one left wing, partially broken .

L. malleolus Freeman 1954: 28 View in CoL , pl. 2, fig. 3f (♂ terminalia). Type-locality: Juan Fernandez Isl., Masatierra, Bahía Cumberland , Gruta de los Patriotas. Holotype ♂, NHM.

( Figure 83 View FIGURES 77–87 )

Notes. The type series included the male holotype and a single paratype, both of which are at the NHM. The labels with the holotype are: “ Leia / malleolus [hw] / Freeman. / HOLOTYPE ” [printed on red label]” // [male terminalia dissected on an acetate sheet] // “HOLO- / TYPE” [printed in black on a rounded label with red border]” // “Juan Fernandez / Masatierra / Bahía Cumberland / Gruta de los Patriotas [pr] / 19.2. [hw] 1951 [pr] / P.G. Kuschel [pr]” // “BMNH(E) # / 254245”. The entire abdomen of the holotype was removed, but only the terminalia was dissected and mounted on the pinned acetate sheet; the rest of the abdomen is glued to the micropin base. As in the case of other species described by Freeman from Juan Fernandez , the type is at the NHM, instead of in the University of Chile at Santiago, as stated in the original publication. There are two identified specimens from the type-locality .

L. monoleuca Edwards 1933: 312 View in CoL . Type-locality: Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, Petrópolis. Holotype ♂, NHM.

( Figure 84 View FIGURES 77–87 )

Notes. The type series included only the male holotype. The holotype labels are: “HOLO- / TYPE” [printed in black on a rounded label with red border]” // “Petrópolis / M. Vogel, 1930” // “ Leia / monoleuca Edw [hw] / F.W. Edwards 193[pr]3[hw]” // “ Brazil: / Th. Borgmeier. / B.M. 1931-577.” // “ HOLOTYPE [pr] / Leia / monoleuca [hw] / det. J.E. Chainey, 1996 [pr]” // “BMNH(E) # / 254204”. The type-locality of L. monoleuca in Papavero (1978:29) wrongly appears as “ São Paulo ”. The NHM has many specimens identified as belonging to this species, but the identity of at least some of them is questionable .

L. nitens ( Williston) 1896: 259 , Pl. VIII, fig. 13 (wing) ( Neoglaphyroptera ). Type-locality: St. Vincent, W.I. Lectotype ♂, NHM (here designated).

( Figure 85 View FIGURES 77–87 )

Notes. Williston (1896), in the original description refers to “ six specimens ”, which include males and females, without specifying the numbers of each gender. Two males and two females, all from the same locality, are housed at the NHM. One of the males has been designated lectotype. The labels of the lectotype are as follows: “SYN- / TYPE” [printed in black on a rounded label with light blue border] // “Winward side / St. Vicent, W.I. / H. H. Smith. // W. Indies. / 1907-66.” // “ 1500 feet ” // [small black label without any writings] // “BMNH(E) # / 254212” // “ Neoglaphyroptera / nitens [hw] / Williston [printed on red on a larger label with red borders]”. Paralectotype labels are as follows: (1) “SYN- / TYPE” [printed in black on a rounded label with light blue border] // “Winward side / St. Vicent, W.I. / H. H. Smith. // W. Indies. / 1907-66.” // “ 1500 feet ” // “BMNH(E) # / 254213”; (2) “SYN- / TYPE” [printed in black on a rounded label with light blue border] // “Winward side / St. Vicent, W.I. / H. H. Smith. // W. Indies. / 1907-66.” // “ 1500 feet ” // “BMNH(E) # / 254214”; (3) “SYN- / TYPE” [printed in black on a rounded label with light blue border] // “Winward side / St. Vicent, W.I. / H. H. Smith. // W. Indies. / 1907-66.” // “ 1500 feet ” // “BMNH(E) # / 254215”. The four specimens seem to be conspecific and are in very good condition.

L. oliveirai Lane 1959: 188 View in CoL , fig. 4 (♂ terminalia). Type-locality: Brazil, Pará, Cachimbo. Holotype ♂, MZUSP.

Notes. The type series included the male holotype, a female allotype, nine male and twelve female paratypes. One male and one female paratypes are present at the NHM ( BMNH (E) # 254227-8), both from the type-locality, one of them with the terminalia dissected .

L. paranensis Edwards 1933: 313 View in CoL . Type-locality: Brazil, Paraná, Rio Negro. Ref.— Lane 1950: 122, figs. 4–7 (♂ terminalia). Holotype ♂, NHM.

( Figure 86 View FIGURES 77–87 )

Notes. The type series included only the male holotype. The labels of the holotype are as follows: “Rio Negro. / Paraná. / 1925” [hw] // “HOLO- / TYPE” [printed in black on a rounded label with red border]” // “ Leia / paranensis Edw. [hw] / F.W. Edwards / det. 1933 [pr]” // “ Brazil: / Th. Borgmeier. / B.M. 1931-577.” // “ HOLOTYPE [pr] / Leia / paranensis [hw] / det. J.E. Chainey, 1995 [pr]” // “BMNH(E) # / 254205”. The holotype is in fairly good condition. The distal part of the abdomen was cut off and the terminalia dissected and mounted separately on a pinned acetate sheet.

L. paulensis Edwards 1933: 312 View in CoL . Type-locality: Brasil, São Paulo, São Paulo. Ref.— Lane 1950: 121, figs 1–3 (♂ terminalia). Holotype ♂, NHM.

( Figure 87 View FIGURES 77–87 )

Notes. The type series included the male holotype, a female allotype, a male and two female paratypes, of which only the holotype is at the NHM. The male holotype, from São Paulo, and an allotype and a male paratype, from Petrópolis, were referred to be at the NHM; one female paratype from São Paulo would be in the “Instituto Biológico”; and one female paratype from Rio Grande do Sul would be at the Vienna Museum. The labels of the holotype are as follows: [male terminalia dissected and mounted on an acetate sheet] // [wing mounted between a rounded microslides, attached to a boardard] // “ Type ” [printed in black on a rounded label with red border]” // “HOLO- / TYPE” [printed in black on a rounded label with red border]” // “ São Paulo [pr] / Capital [hw] / XI- 1929 ” [hw] // “ Brazil: / Th. Borgmeier. / B.M. 1931-577.” // “ Leia / paulensis Edw. [hw] / F.W. Edwards / det. 1933 [pr]” // “ HOLOTYPE [pr] / Leia / paulensis [hw] / det. J.E. Chainey, 1995 [pr]” // “BMNH(E) # / 254247”. The condition of the holotype is fair. Both antennae are missing and all legs have parts missing, with the exception of the mid femora. The conspecificity of a number of identified specimens at the NHM from different Brazilian states is questionable and its confirmation depends of a revision .

L. pedifera Edwards 1933: 316 View in CoL . Type-locality: Venezuela, Ciudad Bolívar. Holotype ♂, NHM.

( Figure 88 View FIGURES 88–99 )

Notes. The type series included only the male holotype. The labels with the type are: “HOLO- / TYPE” [printed in black on a rounded label with red border]” // “South America / Venezuela / Ciudad Bolívar / 1915-428” // “ Leia / pedifera Edw. [hw] / F.W. Edwards / det. 1933 [pr]” // “ HOLOTYPE [pr] / Leia / pedifera [hw] / det. J.E. Chainey, 1995 [pr]” // “BMNH(E) # / 254247”. The condition of the holotype is fair. Legs are attached to the micropin base, as well as the abdomen. The terminalia is dissected and mounted on a pinned acetate sheet.

L. plaumanni Lane 1959: 189 View in CoL . Type-locality: Brazil, São Paulo, Campos do Jordão. Holotype ♀, MZUSP.

Notes. The type series included the female holotype and five female paratypes, of which three female paratypes are at the NHM ( BMNH (E) # 254229-31), all three are from Plaumann’s material. The type-locality is incorrectly stated as “ Santa Catarina, Nova Teutônia” in Papavero (1978: 30) .

L. rufithorax Freeman 1951: 78 View in CoL , fig. 153 (♂ terminalia). Type-locality: Chile, Llanquihue , Casa Pangue. Holotype ♂, NHM.

( Figure 89 View FIGURES 88–99 )

Notes. The type series included the male holotype and a female paratype, both of which are at the NHM. The labels with the holotype are: “ Leia / rufithorax [hw] / Freeman. / HOLOTYPE ” [printed on red label]” // “Casa Pangue / 4–10.xii.1926.” // “S. Chile / Llanquihue prov. / F. & M. Edwards / B.M. 1927–63.” // [male terminalia dissected on an acetate sheet] // “BMNH(E) # / 254234” // “HOLO- / TYPE” [printed in black on a rounded label with red border]”. The condition of the holotype is fair. The abdomen was entirely removed, but only part of it is mounted with the terminalia on the plastic stripe. The female paratype, from Peulla , Chile, is in good condition .

L. salobrensis Edwards 1941: 310 View in CoL , fig. 4 (wing photo). Type-locality: Brazil, Mato Grosso do Sul, Salobra. Holotype ♀, NHM.

( Figure 90 View FIGURES 88–99 )

Notes. The type series included only the female holotype. The labels with the holotype are: “1.210” // “M. Grosso /

Salobra / vii.1939 / Exp. C. Z. B.” // “HOLO- / TYPE ” [printed in black on a rounded label with red border]” //

Leia / salobrensis Edw. [hw] / F.W. Edwards 193[pr]9[hw]” // Brazil. / J Lane. BM 1939.636.” [hw] //

“ HOLOTYPE [pr] / Leia / biamputata [hw] / det. J.E. Chainey, 1996 [pr]” // “BMNH(E) # / 254208”. The holotype is in good condition, with the pin laterally across the thorax, as in other specimens of the C. Z. B. expedition.

L. smithi Edwards 1933: 318 View in CoL . Type-locality: Mexico, Tabasco, Frontera. Holotype ♂, NHM.

( Figure 91 View FIGURES 88–99 )

Notes. The type series included only the male holotype. The labels with the male holotype are: “HOLO- / TYPE” [printed in black on a rounded label with red border]” // “ Leia / smithi Edw. [hw] / F.W. Edwards 193[pr]3[hw]” // “ Neoglaphyroptera / sp –” [hw] // Central America. / Pres. By / F.D. Godman, / O. Salvin. / 1903.172.” [pr]” // “Frontera, / Tabasco. / Jau. H.H. S.” // “ HOLOTYPE [pr] / Leia / smithi [hw] / det. J.E. Chainey, 1995 [pr]” // “BMNH(E) # / 254209”. The holotype is in good condition, the terminalia not dissected; only the distal part of some legs are missing.

L. spinifera Edwards 1933: 316 View in CoL . Type-locality: Bolivia, Mapiri , San Carlos, 800 m. Holotype ♂, MTD.

( Figure 92 View FIGURES 88–99 )

Notes. The type series included the male holotype and a male paratype, of which the paratype from Pinipini , Peru, is at the NHM. The specimen is in fairly good condition, with one of the wings missing. The abdomen was entirely removed, the male terminalia dissected and mounted on a separate strip, the rest of the abdomen glued to the base of the micropin .

L. stonei Lane 1958b: 152 View in CoL . Type-locality: Bolivia, Mapiri , Sarampiuní, 700 m. Holotype ♂, MTD

L. INCOMPLETA Edwards 1933: 314 View in CoL (preocc. Curran 1928). Type-locality: Bolivia, Mapiri, Sarampiuní, 700 m. Holotype ♂, MTD.

( Figure 93 View FIGURES 88–99 )

Notes. Leia stonei is a new name proposed by Lane (1958b) for Leia incompleta Edwards , preoccupied by Curran (1928). The holotype of the species is in the MTD and there is a male paratype from the type-locality at the NHM. The specimen is in good condition (BMNH(E) # / 254219). The abdomen was entirely removed, the terminalia dissected and mounted on a pinned acetate sheet, the rest of the abdomen glued to the base of the micropin.

L. submaculipennis Freeman 1954: 39 View in CoL (nom. nov. for L. maculipennis Freeman View in CoL ). Type-locality: Chile, Valparaiso, Marga Marga. Holotype ♂, NHM.

L. MACULIPENNIS Freeman 1951: 77 View in CoL , figs. 151–152 (preocc. Say 1824). Type-locality: Chile, Valparaiso, Marga Marga. Holotype ♂, NHM.

( Figure 94 View FIGURES 88–99 )

Notes. The type series included the male holotype, four male and five female paratypes, of which the holotype, four male and four female paratypes are at the NHM. The labels with the holotype are: “ Leia / maculipennis [hw] / Freeman. / HOLOTYPE ” [printed on red label]” // [male terminalia dissected on an acetate sheet] // “HOLO- / TYPE” [printed in black on a rounded label with red border]” // “ Chile: / Marga-Marga. / ix.1929. / F. Jaffuel. B.M. 1929-480” // “BMNH(E) # / 254236”. The holotype is in excellent condition. Only the tip of the abdomen was removed, the terminalia mounted with the terminalia on a pinned acetate sheet. The paratype NHM numbers are BMNH(E) # 254237-44. The wing of one of the paratypes is on a slide mounting on the NHM Diptera slide collection and the male terminalia of another male is mounted on a pinned acetate sheet .
