Notes. The type series included six male syntypes , of which two syntypes are at the NHM. The entire specimen of one male syntype is slide mounted and the other one, in poor condition, is pinned. A slide mounted specimen (kept in the NHM Diptera slide collection) has been choosen by Jaschhof & Hippa (2005) as the lectotype . The labels with the lectotype are: “ Manota / defecta / Williston. [handwritten on a folded piece of paper with red borders] // “SYN- / TYPE” [printed in black on a rounded label with light blue border] // “Winward side / St. Vincent, W.I. / H.H. Smith. ” // “ 1000 feet ” // [a black, square label with no writings] // “ W. Indies. / 1907-66.” // “BMNH(E) # / 254365” // “ SYNTYPE of / Manota defecta / Williston, 1896 / det. N.P. Wyatt 2002” // “ LECTOTYPE / des. Jaschhof / et Hippa, / March 2005 ”. The paralectotype collection number is BMNH(E) # 254366. There are additional specimens from Brazil including two from Nova Teutônia (one in the same box of M. defecta ) and one from “Rio Negro, Paraná ”, of Th. Borgmeier, none of them conspecific with the lectotype .
