Thrips hawaiiensis (Morgan) View in CoL
( Figs. 130–136 View FIGURES 130–142 )
Euthrips hawaiiensis Morgan, 1913: 3 View in CoL .
This species shares most character states with T. coloratus View in CoL but is always uniformly dark on abdominal segments and antennal segment III yellow in female, and has metascutum with median pair of setae at anterior margin ( Fig. 132 View FIGURES 130–142 ) and antennae often 8-segmented ( Fig. 131 View FIGURES 130–142 ). However, in male these species can be distinguished from each other by position of metascutal median setae. Moreover, T. florum Schmutz View in CoL that is widespread in tropical areas is very similar to hawaiiensis View in CoL . However, in T. florum View in CoL , the mesonotum is smooth around the anteromedian CPS, subapical seta on the fore wing clavus is longer than apical seta, fourth seta on fore wing is distinctly longer than fifth seta and male has tergite IX with S2 setae much shorter than S1 setae, whereas the mesoscutum is sculptured throughout, the apical seta on the clavus is longer than the subapical seta, fourth seta on fore wing ( Fig 133 View FIGURES 130–142 ) is subequal length to fifth seta and male has tergite IX with S2 setae subequal length to S1 setae ( Fig. 135 View FIGURES 130–142 ) in T. hawaiiensis View in CoL ( Bhatti, 1999; Nakahara, 1985).
This species is distributed throughout Japan and is one of the most common flower-living species. It is widespread in the Oriental region to Australia, Hawaii, Africa and the New World.
