Female macroptera. Body almost uniformly pale brown to brown, often slightly paler in thorax; antennal segments I to II shaded, III pale brown, IV to VII brown; fore wings slightly and almost uniformly shaded; all legs yellowish brown, paler than body; prominent body setae pale to slightly shaded. Head ( Fig. 143 View FIGURES 143–154 ) cheeks rounded, weakly sculptured within ocellar triangle. Ocellar setae III at middle of fore and hind ocelli within ocellar triangle. Postocular setae III the longest, II much shorter than I and III. Antennae ( Fig. 144 View FIGURES 143–154 ) 7-segmented, II with some microtrichial rows on dorsal surface, III to VI short and stout, rounded lateral margin, IV to V pedicelate, VI rounded at each side, the longest. Pronotum ( Fig. 143 View FIGURES 143–154 ) sculptured with wide spaced transverse striae, with 29–34 discal setae; posteroangular setae 2 pairs; posteromarginal setae 3 pairs, setae I the longest. Mesonotum sculptured with transverse anastomosing striae; CPS absent anteromedially. Metascutum ( Fig. 145 View FIGURES 143–154 ) with longitudinal sculpture except anteromedially, lines of sculpture anastomosing at middle; median pair of setae far from anterior margin; CPS absent. Fore wing first vein without long gap in setal row, about eight setae at distal half. Abdominal tergites IV to VIII ( Figs. 146, 147 View FIGURES 143–154 ) with a few or no lines of sculpture slightly extending to mesad of S2 setae; tergite II with 4 lateral marginal setae; tergite VIII with posteromarginal comb complete, but length of microtrichia often irregular; tergite IX with 2 pairs of CPS; sternites III to VII ( Fig. 148 View FIGURES 143–154 ) with about 10 discal setae arranged in transverse line; sternite I with one or two microsetae anteromedially; sternite VII with S1 setae much far from posterior margin; pleurotergites with two to five discal setae and no ciliate microtrichia.

Male. Unknown in Japan.

Masumoto (TUA); 24 females on flowers of Lindera praecox , 5-v-2006, M. Masumoto (TUA); 21 females on flowers of Salix sp. , 5-v-2006, M. Masumoto (TUA); 3 females on leaves of Podocarpus macrophyllus ? [ Podocarpaceae ], 5-v-2006, M. Masumoto (TUA); 9 females on flowers of Salix sp. , 3-v-2007, M. Masumoto (TUA); 4 females on flowers of Salix sp. , 4-v-2007, M. Masumoto (TUA). Gunma Pref., Kusatsu-cho: 5 females on leaves of Alnus hirsta [ Betulaceae ], 12-v-2002, M. Masumoto (TUA); 1 female on leaves of Alnus hirsta , 13-v- 2002, M. Masumoto (TUA); 1 female on leaves of Betulaceae , 11-v-2006, M. Masumoto (TUA). Chiba Pref., Sakae-machi, Bousouno-mura, adjeacent Narita City: 50 females on flower of Eurya japonica [ Theaceae ], 11-iv- 2011, M. Masumoto (TUA). GERMANY, Bausenberg/Eifel (Niederzissen Brohlf.), Rheinland, 1 female on flowers of Prunus spinosa [ Rosaceae ], 14-iv-1972, R. zur Strassen (TUA).

Distribution. Japan (Honshu), Europe.

Comments. This species is here newly recorded from Japan, but was reported as Thrips sp.1 ( Tsutsumi, 1995) . In Japan it has been found on various flowers, young leaves and flower-buds or leaf-buds in early spring.
