Postocular setae I the longest and much longer than longitudinal diameter of hind ocelli, III slightly shorter than I, II and IV minute. Antennae ( Fig. 165 View FIGURES 155–165 ) 7-segmented, segment II with some microtrichial rows on dorsal surface, III the longest or subequal length to VI, III to V straight or slightly rounded at each side and without apical neck, IV to V weakly pedicelate; VI widest near middle and tapering to apex, with 12 setae. Antennal segments I to VII length/ width ratio as follows: 0.9–1.0, 1.3–1.5, 2.6–3.2, 2.5–3.2, 2.0–2.2, 2.8–3.2, 1.7–2.0. Pronotum ( Fig. 164 View FIGURES 155–165 ) 0.7–0.8 times as long as wide, strongly sculptured with transverse striae, with more 35 discal setae; anterior margin without long setae; posteroangular setae 2 pairs, setae I 0.4–0.5 times as long as pronotal median length and slightly longer than or almost as long as setae II; posteromarginal setae 3 pairs, setae I the longest. Mesonotum sculptured with transverse anastomosing striae; CPS present anteromedially. Metascutum ( Fig. 166 View FIGURES 166–178 ) sculptured with longitudinal striae except anterior to median pair of setae, lines of sculpture more or less ill-formed at middle; median pair of setae behind anterior margin, about 0.6 times as long as metascutal median length; CPS present. Fore wing costal vein with 26–32 setae, first vein with long gap in setal row, seven basal and three distal setae, second vein with 16– 20 setae. Abdominal tergites with small scallops along posterior margin, these scallops distinct on posterior segments; tergites III to VIII ( Fig. 167 View FIGURES 166–178 ) with no lines of sculpture extending to mesad of S1 setae; tergite II with 4 lateral marginal setae; tergite VIII with posteromarginal comb complete, often irregular in length or space; tergite IX with both anterior and posterior pairs of CPS, S1, S2, S3 and MD setae each 1.0–1.2, 1.3–1.4, 1.1–1.3 and 0.5 times as long as median length of the tergite; tergite X with S1 and S2 setae each 1.3–1.7 and 1.3–1.7 times as long as median length of the tergite; sternite I without microsetae anteromedially; sternites III to VII ( Fig. 168 View FIGURES 166–178 ) with (II with 3 or 4) about 14 discal setae transversely arranged in nearly straight line; sternite VII with S1 setae at or near posterior margin, at most as wide as diameter of the setal socket from posterior margin; pleurotergites without discal setae, with very weak dentate microtrichia along lines of sculpture. Ovipositor 1.9–2.0 times as long as pronotal median length.

Measurements of holotype female. Distended body length 1370. Head length 89 (length including anterior prolongation 101), width across cheeks 140; compound eye dorsal length 50, width 38. Pronotal median length 125, width 175; posteroangular setae I length 51–53, setae II length 49–50; posteromarginal setae I 25. Metascutal median length 75, median setae length 43–45. Fore wing length 710, width at middle 50. Abdominal tergite IX median length 63; S1 setae length 78–80, S2 setae length 93–95, S3 setae length 80, MD setae length 35; tergite X length 63, S1 setae length 90, S2 setae length 85. Ovipositor length 250. Antennal segments I to VII length (width) as follows: 25 (28), 33 (24), 48 (15), 43 (15), 33 (15), 48 (15), 13 (6).

Male macroptera. Distended body length 1.0– 1.1 mm. Body uniformly dark brown. Antennal segment VI with more setae on dorsal surface than in female. Type series. Holotype female, Japan, Ogasawara Islands , Chichi-jima Is., Mt. Asahi-yama, on evergreen tree leaves (unidentified), 11-iii-1988, S. Okajima.

Paratypes: 71 females, 43 males, same data as holotype. Chichi-jima Is.: 12 females, 3 males, same locality and date as the holotype, on Pseudosasa japonica [ Poaceae ], S. Okajima. Mt. Mikazuki-yama: 11 females, 2 males on grass, 10-iii-1988, S. Okajima; 2 females, 1 male on flowers of Bidens pilosa [ Asteraceae ], 8-i-2004, S. Sugimoto; 1 male on Carex sp. [ Cyperaceae ], 8-i-2004, S. Sugimoto. Ougiura, 15 females & 1 male on flowers of Rhaphiolepis indica [ Rosaceae ], 9-i-2004, S. Sugimoto. Higashidaira, Chuou-san, 1 female & 1 male on Psychotria homalosperma [ Rubiaceae ], 14-vii-2004, K. Watanabe. Haha-jima Is.: Okimura: 4 females, 1 male on flowers of Hibiscus sp. [ Malvaceae ], 9-iii-1990, S. Okajima; 2 females on flowers of Bidens pilosa [ Asteraceae ], 15-xii-2003, Y. Tatematsu. The holotype and most paratypes are deposited in TUA.

Comments. This species has been recognized as a population of T. coloratus with dark body in Ogasawara Islands ( Palmer, 1992). However, these individuals are here recognized as a distinct species with S1 setae of abdominal sternite VII at or near the posterior margin in females and tergite VIII of male with a posteromarginal comb at middle. In contrast, in T. coloratus , sternites VII of female has the S1 setae in front of the posterior margin and tergite VIII of male is without a posteromarginal comb.
