This is one of the most common species in temperate areas of the world, but males are rare other than in the eastern Mediterranean countries. This species is highly polyphagous, breeding both in the flowers and on the leaves of many kinds of plants, especially Allium species (onions, leeks and garlic), and is well known as one of the most important crop pests. This species is easily distinguished in this genus by the combination of the following character states: ocellar triangle without red pigment before KOH treatment, 7-segmented antennae ( Fig. 233 View FIGURES 223–238 ), postocular setae I to III subequal length ( Fig. 232 View FIGURES 223–238 ), fore wing first vein usually with four distal setae, metascutum ( Fig. 234 View FIGURES 223–238 ) with irregular reticulation having internal wrinkles and no CPS, tergite IX ( Fig. 236 View FIGURES 223–238 ) with one pair of CPS, pleurotergites without discal setae and with numerous ciliate microtrichia ( Fig. 235 View FIGURES 223–238 ), and sternites without discal setae. Male has abdominal tergite VIII ( Fig. 237 View FIGURES 223–238 ) with very small posteromarginal comb at middle, IX with S1 setae at level of S2 setae and subequal length to S2 setae, their bases equidistant; sternites without discal setae, III to V ( Fig. 238 View FIGURES 223–238 ) each with a transverse narrow pore plate, IV (or III) to VIII with S1 setae (VII to VIII also with S2 setae) in front of posterior margin.
