This species is distributed throughout Japan, and widespread in the Oriental region to Europe, Australia and South America. It is known as a pest of rice. Body uniformly brown to dark brown; fore wings almost uniformly brown with a small pale spot near base. Head ( Figs. 8–10 View FIGURES 1–17 ) prolonged anteriorly, nearly straight at cheeks. Postocular setae I often absent, III much longer than I and the longest, II often slightly behind setal row. Antennal segments III and IV without distal neck ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 1–17 ). Metascutum ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 1–17 ) without CPS. Mesothoracic endofurca without spinula. Abdominal tergites often with small teeth directed laterally along posterior margin ( Figs. 13, 14 View FIGURES 1–17 ); tergite VIII ( Fig. 15 View FIGURES 1–17 ) with posteromarginal comb complete; tergite IX with posterior pair of CPS only; sternites without discal setae, usually with small scallops along posterior margin; sternite I with one or two microsetae anteromedially; sternites III to VII or fewer sternites often each with a small pore plate. In male, body colour similar to female but head to thorax and fore wing often paler than female; abdominal tergites ( Fig. 16 View FIGURES 1–17 ) with distinct teeth directed laterally along posterior margin, but VIII with posteromarginal comb short teeth-like and directed medially; sternites ( Fig. 17 View FIGURES 1–17 ) with some microtrichia, pore plates oblong.
