Stenchaetothrips mucunae (Ishida) View in CoL

( Figs. 32–37 View FIGURES 27–37 )

Thrips mucunae Ishida, 1934: 57 View in CoL .

Female macroptera. Distended body length 1.1 mm. Body generally yellowish brown, abdomen darker forward posteriorly; antennal segment I to II pale brown, III to IV pale, IV shaded with extreme base pale, VI to VII pale brown; fore wings pale brown with basal fifth pale; all legs yellow; prominent body setae shaded. Head ( Fig. 32 View FIGURES 27–37 ) 0.8 times as long as wide, sculptured with transverse anastomosing striae at basal third dorsally, cheeks slightly rounded. Ocellar setae III situated between fore and hind ocelli. Postocular setae uniserial, setae III slightly longer than I and the longest, II and III small. Antennal segment ( Fig. 33 View FIGURES 27–37 ) II with some microtrichial rows on dorsal surface, VI the longest. Pronotum ( Fig. 32 View FIGURES 27–37 ) 0.8 times as long as wide, with about 30 discal setae; anterior margin without long setae; posteroangular setae I 0.5 times as long as pronotal median length and 1.1 times as long as setae II; posteromarginal setae three pairs, setae I the longest. Mesonotum apparently with CPS anteromedially. Metascutum ( Fig. 34 View FIGURES 27–37 ) with median pair of setae 0.5 times as long as metascutal median length; CPS present; lines of sculpture relatively wide spaced at middle. Fore wing first vein with seven basal and three distal setae, costal vein with 22 setae in left; second vein with 11 setae in left. Mesothoracic endofurca without spinula. Abdominal tergites II to VII ( Fig. 35 View FIGURES 27–37 ) with small teeth at each side of posterior margin; tergite VIII with posteromarginal comb complete; tergite IX with two pairs of CPS, S1, S2, S3 and MD setae each 1.0, 1.5, 1.4 and 0.7 times as long as median length of the tergite; tergite X with S1 and S2 setae each 1.9 and 1.5 times as long as median length of the tergite; sternites without discal setae; sternite I with a microsetae anteromedially. Ovipositor 1.7 times as long as pronotal median length.

Measurements of holotype female. Distended body length 1110. Head length 98 (113 including anterior projection), width across cheeks 118; compound eye dorsal length 63, width 43. Pronotal median length 115, width 140; posteromarginal setae I length 53, setae II length 50–52. Metascutal median length 58, median setae length 30–?. Fore wing length 620, width at middle 45. Abdominal tergite IX median length 63; S1 setae length 64–65, S2 setae length 95–98, S3 setae length 81, MD setae length 40–45; tergite X length 48, S1 setae length 83–88, S2 setae length 71–75. Ovipositor length 200. Antennal segments I to VII length (width) as follows: 25(23), 30 (21), 57 (14), 43 (15), 38 (14), 57 (15), 18 (6).

Male macroptera. Distended body length 0.9 mm. Body colour similar to female, antennal segment I yellowish brown, II paler than I, III to IV pale, V pale with shaded at distal half, VI pale brown with basal third to half pale, VII pale brown. Abdominal tergites ( Fig. 36 View FIGURES 27–37 ) with posteromarginal teeth slightly larger than in female; tergite VIII without posteromarginal comb; chaetotaxy of tergite IX unclear; sternal pore plates ( Fig. 37 View FIGURES 27–37 ) oblong, 33–45 microns width.

Measurements of “ allotype ” male. Distended body length 890. Head length 95 (100 including anterior projection), width across cheeks 105; compound eye dorsal length 60, width 33. Pronotal median length 100, width 118; posteromarginal setae I length 44–49, setae II length 43–45. Metascutal median length 53, median setae length 23–29. Fore wing length 540, width at middle 40. Antennal segments I to VII length (width) as follows: 20 (23), 28 (20), 38 (13), 35(13), 33 (14), 43 (15), 18 (6).

Specimens examined. Holotype female & “ allotype ” male, JAPAN, Ryukyus, Okinawa-hontou Is., Nishibara nr. Naha, on Mucuna capitata [ Poaceae ], 8.xii.1931, M. Ishida (IHU).

Distribution. Japan: Ryukyus (Okinawa-hontou Is.)

Comments. This species is known only from the type series. The holotype is very similar to specimens collected from Okinawa and identified as S. minutus based on Bhatti’s concept in 1982. These may be the same species. However, details of this species could not be observed on the holotype because of the poorly-mounted slide .
