Stenchaetothrips undatus Wang View in CoL

( Figs. 47–53 View FIGURES 38–50 View FIGURES 51–61 )

Female macroptera. Body usually bicoloured, head and abdomen brown, thorax yellowish brown to pale brown and usually distinctly paler than abdomen; antennal segments I to II yellow to pale brown, often brown, III yellow, IV yellow often with distal third shaded or pale brown to brown, V yellow with distal half pale brown to brown, VI brown often with basal half pale, VII brown; fore wings brown with basal fourth including clavus pale; all legs yellow; prominent body setae pale brown. Head ( Figs. 47, 48 View FIGURES 38–50 ) slightly constricted at just behind compound eyes and rounded at cheeks. Ocellar setae III situated lateral or posterolateral to fore ocellus. Postocular setae III subequal to setae I, often one side seta longer than setae I. Antennal segment ( Figs. 49, 50 View FIGURES 38–50 ) III usually slender and slightly narrow apex, IV to V slightly pedicelate, VI rounded at each side of basal half and gently tapering to apex, usually the longest, often subequal to III. Pronotum ( Figs. 47, 48 View FIGURES 38–50 ) weakly sculptured medially, with 22–31 discal setae; posteromarginal setae I the longest. Mesonotum ( Fig. 51 View FIGURES 51–61 ) usually with paired CPS anteromedially, rarely only one CPS present. Metascutum without CPS. Fore wing first vein with seven basal and three distal setae. Mesothoracic endofurca without spinula. Abdominal tergites ( Fig. 52 View FIGURES 51–61 ) with a few small teeth on posterior margin at each side, often with small teeth directed laterally along posterior margin; tergite VIII with posteromarginal comb complete; tergite IX with both anterior and posterior pairs of CPS; sternites without discal setae; sternite I without microsetae anteromedially.

Male macroptera. Body variably but distinctly bicoloured, usually head to abdominal segment V yellow but ocellar triangle shaded, VI shaded, often head and abdomen brown; antennal segments I to V yellow, VI yellow with distal half pale brown, VII pale brown; fore wings and all legs same as female; prominent body setae pale or shaded. Abdominal tergites II to VII ( Fig. 53 View FIGURES 51–61 ) with large stout teeth directed to outside along posterior margin; tergite VIII with similar teeth directed medially along posterior margin; tergite IX with S1 setae at level of S2 setae, slightly shorter than S2 setae, their bases equidistant; sternites with small scallops along posterior margin; sternal pore plates oblong.

Distribution. Japan (Honshu, Ryukyus, Ogasawara Islands, Izu Islands), Taiwan.

Comments. This species is newly recorded from Japan. According to the original description ( Wang, 2000), antennal segments I–IV are yellow and abdominal tergites have blunt or laterally pointed posteromarginal teeth. However, a paratype female studied has antennal segment II barely shaded and no such teeth on abdominal tergites, and no teeth are indicated in figure 24 of the original description (P. 251). Moreover, in more than 30 specimens studied from Taiwan some females are shaded at antennal segments I–II and distal half of segment IV and only a few females have laterally pointed teeth. There are weak differences in shape of antennal segments III and IV and in posteromarginal teeth of abdominal tergites between the females of Ryukyu Islands and other Japanese specimens, e.g. antennal segment III usually slender and narrow at apex like neck in the Ryukyu Islands, usually shorter and stouter in other areas, but these are continuous and can not distinguished each other satisfactorily although no males adults had been found except Ryukyu Islands. This species appears to be the one identified by Kudo (1972: 238) as Chloethrips bambusae , judging from the length of antennal segments III and IV as discussed above. In specimens from Japan studied here, the lengths of antennal segments III and IV are 38–55 microns long and 35–50 microns long, respectively.
