Thrips aspinus Mound & Masumoto View in CoL
( Figs. 69–73 View FIGURES 62–73 )
This species is newly recorded from Japan. It is closely related to T. subnudula , which is newly recorded from Japan as below, by having metascutum reticulate (cf. Fig. 215 View FIGURES 207–222 ), abdominal tergite VIII ( Fig. 72 View FIGURES 62–73 ) with posteromarginal comb laterally, sternites ( Fig. 73 View FIGURES 62–73 ) with many discal setae arranged irregularly in addition to more than 10 posteromarginal setae, and pleurotergites with many discal setae ( Fig. 71 View FIGURES 62–73 ). It can be distinguished from the latter species by having no long posteroangular setae on pronotum ( Fig. 69 View FIGURES 62–73 ). These two species share most of above character states with an Australian species T. imaginis Bagnall , but this Australian species has abdominal sternites with 6 posteromarginal setae although a few discal setae are often displaced to the posterior margin.
Specimens examined. JAPAN, Ryukyus, Iriomote-jima Is., nr. Ohara, Itokawa-rindou, 2 females on dead Arenga engleri frond [ Arecaceae ], 3-ix-1988, S. Okajima (TUA).
Distribution. Japan (Ryukyus), Australia, Peninsular Malaysia.
