Thrips brevicornis Priesner View in CoL

( Figs. 74–81 View FIGURES 74–89 )

Female macroptera. Body including legs uniformly yellow; antennal segments I to II pale, III brownish yellow, darker than II, IV brown with base slightly paler, V to VII brown; fore wings uniformly pale; prominent body setae brown. Head ( Fig. 74 View FIGURES 74–89 ) rounded at cheeks. Ocellar setae III at margin of or outside ocellar triangle near anterior ocellus, subequal in length to longitudinal diameter of hind ocelli. Postocular setae I, III subequal length to ocellar setae III, II and IV very small. Antennae ( Fig. 75 View FIGURES 74–89 ) 7-segmented, II with microtrichial rows, III the longest, III to IV without apical neck, III to VI gently rounded at each side, IV to V pedicelate, VI widest at middle. Pronotum ( Fig. 74 View FIGURES 74–89 ) distinctly sculptured with transverse anastomosing striae, with 20–25 discal setae; posteroangular setae 2 pairs; posteromarginal setae 3 pairs, setae I the longest. Mesonotum with CPS anteromedially. Metascutum ( Fig. 76 View FIGURES 74–89 ) sculptured with narrow spaced longitudinal anastomosing striae except anteromedially, interval between striations narrower than CPS medially; median pair of setae far from anterior margin; CPS present. Fore wing first vein with seven basal and three distal setae. Abdominal tergites II to VIII ( Figs. 77, 78 View FIGURES 74–89 ) with no lines of sculpture extending to mesad of S1 setae; tergite II with 4 lateral marginal setae, but fourth seta (situated most anteriorly) often displaced onto pleurotergite; tergite VIII with posteromarginal comb complete; tergite IX with two pairs of CPS; sternites without discal setae; sternite I with two microsetae anteromedially; sternite VII with S1 setae far from posterior margin; pleurotergites with one to three discal setae and without ciliate microtrichia.

Male macroptera. Body colour similar to female Antennal segment VI ( Fig. 79 View FIGURES 74–89 ) with more than 20 setae. Abdominal tergite VIII ( Fig. 80 View FIGURES 74–89 ) usually with a few microtrichia at middle of posterior margin; tergite IX with S1 setae at or often slightly ahead of level of S2 setae, subequal in length to or slightly longer than S2 setae, their bases equidistant; sternites III to VII each with a broad oblong pore plate ( Fig. 81 View FIGURES 74–89 ).

Distribution. Japan (mountain area in Honshu), Europe.

Biology. This species occurs in the flowers at the mountain areas of Japan..

Comments. This species is here newly recorded from Japan but Tsutsumi (1995) reported it as Thrips sp.5 . It is very similar to T. typicus described below by having pleurotergites with discal setae and sternites without discal setae. But females of this species are uniformly yellow whereas T. typicus is pale brown; discrimination of the males is difficult. Moreover, this species shares some character states with T. setosus but these two are distinguishable as discussed below.
