Laparocerus lanatus ( Wollaston, 1854)

Atlantis lanatus Wollaston 1854, p 372 , Table 7, Figure 6 (habitus).

Type locality. Curral das Romerias, Island of Madeira .

Lectotype: 1♀, August 1847, Curral das Romerias, leg. Wollaston. NHM, London. Paralectotypes: 1„, 1♀ ( Figure 3A ) same data ; 2„„, 2♀♀ [1277], Pico da Cruz , 1851, leg. Heer (ex litt.). NHM, London. All males, slightly immature . 1♀, near Mte Gorgulho , leg. Wollaston. UMO, Oxford .

Remarks. According to the description (‘‘…rather abundant’’) it is highly probable that there are many other syntypes around. However, I have not made paralectotypes out of several very old specimens of lanatus preserved in the DEI (Coll. Schaufuss, Coll. Kraatz, Coll. Stierlin, etc.) as there is no clear evidence of being syntypes of Wollaston. Furthermore, three specimens placed as L. lanatus in the collection Oberthür-Wollaston in Paris, are misidentified; they are L. clavatus ( Wollaston, 1854) . In the Zoological Museum of the University of Amsterdam, there is one female (Wollaston mounting card!), erroneously identified as L. lamellipes , bearing the species-locality number [241] which in the London list corresponds to Cercyon quisquilium , and in the Oxford list to Stenus guttula .

Remarks. Wollaston (1857, p 114) synonymized this species with A. noctivagans Wollaston, 1854 , but later he recognized A. lauripotens as a valid species ( Wollaston 1871, p 273). This rehabilitation was probably overlooked by Schmitz (1898, p 154) in his list of the Madeiran coleoptera.
