Macrostomus ferrugineus species-group

This group of species is characterized by face slightly wider at ventral margin; one pair of stout ocellar setae; flagellum tri-segmented; setae of the thorax: 3–4 dorsocentrals; 1 postpronotal; 1 supra-alar presutural (absent only in M. ferrugineus ); 0 supra-alar postsutural; 1 postalar; 1 notopleural posterior stout and 2 weak; 1–2 pair(s) of scutellars; 3–5 antepronotals; 1–3 tiny proepisternals and 3–5 katatergitals. Hind tibia with 2–7 long dorsal setae and first hind tarsomere with 1–7 long dorsal setae. Male wing lightly infuscated, nearly hyaline (except M. longipennis , n. sp.); costal cell and apical patch brown; pterostigma darker; veins M 1, M 2 and apex of A 1 evanescent (rarely M 1 and M 2 distinct); cell dm elongate, blunt. Male terminalia with tergite 8 closely associated with sternite 8, projected and prolonged distally, with apex acute or blunt. Epandrium with small anterodorsal break and no anteroventral sinus; anterodorsal and posterodorsal protuberances of subequal height or posterodorsal higher than anterodorsal protuberance. Hypandrium slender, rather narrow, generally with distinct setae basally and pair of distal protuberances. Cercus divided into two lobes ( Rafael & Cumming 2004), anterior cercus somewhat elongate and posterior cercus with a membranous or sclerotized protuberance. Phallus as long as hypandrium.

Female. Frons as wide as or slightly wider than anterior ocellus width. Face from one third to almost as large as width of anterior ocellus. Legs with or without pinnate scales on hind tibia dorsally, rarely present ventrally. Wing distinctly more infuscated and wider than in male or approximately of same width. Terminalia usually less shining and more gray pruinose than preabdomen. Tergite 8 elongate, wider at base and with distal sinus ( Fig. 6h ). Sternite 8 higher laterally on posterior third and ventrally with two less sclerotized spots at distal one quarter ( Figs. 6i–j ). Genital fork sclerotized, rather simple, sometimes with short lateral projections ( Figs. 6k–l ). Genital chamber membranous with small sclerotized areas. Spermatheca with relatively long duct and rather rounded capsule ( Fig. 6m ).
