( Figs. 1–3 View FIGURES 1 – 3 )

Diagnosis. Mandibles slender and edentate; flagellar pubescence erect; eyes glabrous, large and gibbous; frons coriaceous; WH 0.93 X LH; WF 0.89 X HE; anterior angle of ocellar triangle about a right angle; pronotal disc with anterior carina; propodeal disc 0.71 X as wide as long, with three weak carinae.

Description. Male. Body length 1.6 mm. LFW 1.4 mm. Color: head and mesosoma black; metasoma, legs, antennae and mandibles light castaneous, clypeus dark brown, wings hyaline.

Head ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 3 ): mandibles slender and edentate, ending in a cutting edge. Clypeus with rounded median lobe, lateral lobes well developed, median carina incomplete apically. First four antennal segments in a ratio of 20:10:11:11, segment III 2.2 X as long as wide, segment XI 2.5 X as long as wide, flagellar pubescence erect. Eyes glabrous, large and gibbous. Frons coriaceous and moderately distinctly punctate. WH 1.08 X LH, WF 0.48 X WH, WF 0.89 X HE, OOL 0.5 X WOT. Ocelli in a flat triangle, anterior angle of ocellar triangle about a right angle. Vertex straight, rounded posterolaterally. VOL 0.3 X HE.

Mesosoma ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 3 ): pronotum and mesonotum coriaceous and shining. Pronotal disc 1.16 X as wide as long, anterior margin carinate, posterior margin paralleled by a series of small foveae. Notauli very weak, narrow, short, impressed only on the anterior half of mesoscutum. Parapsidal furrows narrow, short, impressed only on the posterior half of mesoscutum. Scutellar groove deep and very thick, not dilated at the ends. Propodeal disc 0.71 X as wide as long, with three weak discal carinae, the median one complete but very weak posteriorly, the paramedian ones present only in the anterior half of the disc, lateral carina paralleled by a very weak sublateral carina, disc microstriate, more conspicuously among the discal carinae, declivity and lateral surface of propodeum areolate, declivity without median carina. Mesopleuron with lower fovea ill defined, with central pit.

Metasoma: polished. Genitalia ( Figs. 2–3 View FIGURES 1 – 3 ): paramere with apex rounded, volsella with cuspis very long, almost as long as paramere, aedeagus bottle-shaped, without median constriction, basal margin straight with rounded corners, apodeme with base slightly directed outward.

Material examined. HOLOTYPE: male, BRAZIL, Amapá, Curiaú, 19.XI.1981, Malaise trap 4m ( MPEG). PARATYPES: BRAZIL, Pará, 1 male, Serra Norte, X.1982, CDC trap ( INPA); 1 male, Paranapanema, Serra Norte, 1.XI.1983 ( INPA).

Variation. Legs, antennae and mandibles yellow, mesosoma dark brown. Body length from 1.3 to 1.6 mm; WH 1.0 X LH; WF 0.83–0.92 X HE; third antennal segment 2.2–2.8 X as long as wide.

Remarks. This is the second Neotropical species of Holepyris with eyes glabrous. The other species is H. sylvanidis (Brethes 1913) . We compared our material of H. eminentus with the type series of H. sylvanidis deposited at Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales Bernardino Rivadavia (curator: A. Roig Alsina) and concluded that they are very different. The former has mandibles edentate, median lobe of clypeus well developed, notauli incomplete, whereas the latter has the male with mandible tetradentate, median lobe of clypeus not wider than the lateral ones, and the unusually complete notauli. Additionally H. eminentus has very large and gibbous eyes, which becomes promptly recognizable. We also compared H. eminentus with the type series of H. bimini Evans, 1977 deposited at American Museum of Natural History (curator: J. Carpenter). H. bimini also has large and bulging eyes, but the paramere narrower and cuspis shorter than H. eminentus .

Etymology. The specific epithet refers to the bulging eyes.
