Sesieutes emancipatus View in CoL sp. n. ( figs 762-766 View Figs 762 - 766 , map 38 View Map 38 )

Type locality. — Malaysia. Perak, Chenderiang.

Type material.— Holotype ♂ ( MHNG) from the type locality, NE of Tanah Rata and 5 km NE of Chenderiang village, primary evergreen rainforest , 250-330 m, sifting leaf litter, 22- 31.i.1994, P.J. Schwendinger; paratypes: 1 ♂, 1 ♀ ( CD), same data , 2 ♀ ( MHNG), Chenderiang, 330-400 m, pitfall traps, 15-22.i. 1995, PJ. Schwendinger .

Other material.— None.

Diagnosis. — Males are distinguished from all hitherto described species by the embolus and conductor arising basally on the tegulum and by the shape of the palpal tibial apophysis. Females differ by the shape of the epigyne which is wider than long, with openings at the anterio-lateral angles. This species is similar to an undescribed species from Maxwell Hill, but is distinct from that species by the absence of a ventral pattern on the abdomen, the presence of a boss on coxa IV and differences in the male palpal tibial apophysis. In the species from Maxwell Hill the distal tibial apophysis is obsolete, and in the female the PM spinnerets are not reduced in size. S. emancipatus is the only species in which the female PM spinnerets in females are much reduced.

Description.— MALE, holotype. Total length 4.00 mm, other male 4.25 mm. Carapace length 2.00 mm, width 1.40 mm, height at coxae II 0.75 mm, head width 0.85 mm, width eye group 0.55 mm; abdomen 2.00 mm long including collar, 1.25 mm wide. Leg lengths: leg I 5.50 mm (1.50-2.00-1.15-0.85), leg II 4.70 mm (1.25-1.70-1.00-0.75), leg III 4.20 mm (1.15-1.35-1.00-0.70), leg IV 6.10 mm (1.60-1.90-1.70-0.90), palp 0.75-0.35-0.50 including apophysis- 0.90 mm. Carapace, sternum and mouthparts dark reddish brown, entirely covered with dense granulations, legs pale orange brown, femur I and IV tinged with dark grey, tibia I and IV darkening, with white apical band. Abdomen dorsally with two broad reverse V-shaped lighter bands, divided in the middle, the posterior one with a dark dot in the middle, in darker specimens this becomes difficult to see; dorsal scutum bordered posteriorly by a dark circle around the rear, behind which dorsally a white area in front of spinnerets; ventral surface of post-genital abdomen white, with four parallel rows of small chitinous discs. AME 11/2 x larger than ALE, PME slightly smaller than PLE, PME separated by 11/2 x their d, and the same distance from PLE. Coxa IV with conical protuberance on posterior margin. Leg spination: femur I with 0-1-0pl, femur IV with 1-0-0d and several strong erect setae, tibia I with 7pv and 6rv, tibia II with 5pv and 4rv, tibia III with 1-0v+2ap, 1-1 pl, tibia IV with l-2+2ap, 0-1 pl, 0-1 rl, metatarsus I with 2-2- 2-2v, metatarsus II with 2-2-2v, metatarsus III with 0-2-0v, 1-0-0pl, metatarsus IV with 1- 2-1v, l-0-0pl, 1-0-0rl. Dorsal scutum extended to near the spinnerets, posteriorly truncate, with smooth surface with dispersed erect setae. Collar of ventral scutum with three grooves. FEMALE, paratype. Total length 5.00 mm (other females 5.10 and 5.40 mm respectively). Carapace length 2.40 mm, width 1.75 mm, head width 1.10 mm, width eye group 0.60 mm; abdomen 2.75 mm long, 1.65 mm wide, epigyne 0.80 mm wide, 0.55 mm long. Leg lengths: leg I 6.60 mm (2.00-2.30-1.35-0.95) leg II 5.70 mm (1.65-2.00-1.15-0.90), leg III 5.15 mm (1.50-1.70-1.20-0.75), leg IV 7.15 mm (1.50-2.50-2.00-1.15), palp 0.85-0.35- 0.45- 0.75 mm. Carapace, eyes, mouthparts, sternum and legs as in ♂; abdomen ( fig. 762 View Figs 762 - 766 ) covered with scutum over 3/5, with similar pattern as male, sides dark grey with anterior white band just behind ventral scutum. Protuberance on coxa IV more rounded. PMS much reduced in size, length about 1/5 or 1/6 of that of PLS in each of the 3 females available (normally only slightly shorter than PLS). Epigyne ( fig. 765 View Figs 762 - 766 ) wider than long, trapezoid, openings wide apart anterolaterally, vulva fig. 766 View Figs 762 - 766 .

Distribution.— At present known from the type locality only.

Etymology. — From emancipare (Lat.), to give independence; the name refers to the modern English meaning of this word and alludes to the womens’ movement to free themselves from inhibitions imposed by traditional female duties. The spinning apparatus of the PM spinnerets, used for spinning egg sacs, represents such a duty.
