Diagnosis. See under the genus diagnosis.
Re-description. Adult ( Figs 50–55 View FIGURES 50–55 , 59–62 View FIGURES 56–62 ). Wingspan 27–32 mm.
Head dark grey to black, frons with triangular tuft of scales, labial palpus weakly down curved, twice as long as diameter of an eye, covered with grey, brown-tipped scales, base dirty white, inner and upper surface white, segment 3 about 1/3 length of segment 2, scape dark brown, thick, flagellum brown, white ringed, uniformly light brown underside, in female filiform, in male pubescens ventrally ( Fig. 61 View FIGURES 56–62 ) unipectinated, bearing long (approximately 3-3.5x of flagellum) feathered processes on the underside ( Fig. 62 View FIGURES 56–62 ), flagellomeres 1-8 extended, with sinus containing tuft of raised scales dorsally ( Fig. 61 View FIGURES 56–62 ), proboscis subequal in length with labial palpus.
Thorax and tegulae brown mixed with grey. Forewing greyish-brown, white subcostal pattern to 1/3 width of the forewing, paired black spot at 1/3 and 2/3 length, fold indistinctly mottled with black, black costal oblique touch in the apex, black spot at base of costal margin, paired dark grey narrow transversal subterminal line, termen blackedged, cilia dark grey with narrow dirty white line; hindwing light grey, light brown shade along anterior margin and in the outer corner, cilia dirty white with narrow black line.
Male genitalia ( Fig. 58 View FIGURES 56–62 ). Uncus plate broadly separated into two long, narrow apically pointed lobes sparsely covered with short setae. Gnathos as long as uncus, consists of two elongated lobes weakly serrated on apex and in the distal 1/3 on outer margin. Tegumen about as broad as long, subequal in length with uncus and gnathos. Valva nearly parallel-sided in basal half, then ventral margin weakly broadened and abruptly curved towards rounded apex; two narrow folds along dorsal and ventral margin to half length; apical 1/3 and ventral margin covered with hair-like setae. Juxta plate subovate, twice as broad as long. Saccus as long as tegumen, subtriangular with rounded apex. Aedeagus 2/3 length of valva, basal 1/3 narrowed on one side, distal portion weakly narrowed apically, apex truncate, vesica with one narrow pointed cornutus about half as long as aedeagus.
Female genitalia ( Figs 56, 57 View FIGURES 56–62 ). Papillae anales distinctly longer than segment VIII, basal half nearly parallel-sided, then ventral margin narrowed towards dorsally projecting rounded apex, with distinct sclerotized narrow pattern along dorsal magin. Segment VIII about as broad as long, sternum VIII with deep V- or U-shaped posterior emargination reaching to about half length of setrnum, evenly sclerotized except for lateral patches, anterior margin rounded, strongly edged. Tergum VIII well sclerotised posteriorely, posterior margin with distinct W-shaped emargination. Apophyses posteriores as long as papillae anales, apophyses anteriores shorter than segment VIII, weakly curved distally. Ductus bursae 1/3 length of corpus bursae, moderately broad, colliculum distinct, about 2/3 length of ductus bursae. Corpus bursae elongated, subovate, without a signum.
Variation. Two females examined from Ukraine and Turkey show variation in the shape of segment VIII from rounded to subquadrangular; the apophyses anteriores varying from direct to curved, ductus slightly varying in width and the corpus bursae varying in shape.
Distribution. Turkey ( Ragonot 1887), Iran ( Amsel 1950, 1961), Greece: Crete (Lepiforum 2018), Ukraine: Crimea ( Budashkin 1992, 2004).
Biology. Host plant unknown. Just 10- 15 specimens were collected in Karadag Nature Reserve (Eastern Crimea) from late August to late September at light since 1985.
Remarks. Zophodiodes leucocostella , a type species for monotypic genus Zophodiodes , was described based on unspecified number of specimens from Amasia ( Turkey). Four females, which undoubtedly belong to the type series, are kept in the collection of MfN ( Figs 52–55 View FIGURES 50–55 ). The specimen labelled “zophodiodes, leucocostella, Rag. Type” | “Otto” | “48” | “ Amasia ” is designated here as lectotype ( Fig. 54 View FIGURES 50–55 ).
Hafisia lundbaldi , a type species for monotypic genus Hafisia , was described based on eight males and one female collected in Fars Province of Iran. The photograph of male holotype and drawing of its genitalia were provided by Amsel (1950: figs 33, 72; 1954: Pl. 27, fig. 314). The photograph of the holotype and its genitalia are also available from http://www2.nrm.se/en/lep_nrm/l/. Two males and one female from Ukraine (Karadag) are identical both externally and in genitalia to the holotype of H. lundbladi and to the females of Z. leucocostella in all details. The above mentioned variation in some characters of the female genitalia most likely results from the different way of genitalia preparation. Hence, the following synonymy is established: Hafisia Amsel 1950 syn. nov. of Zophodiodes Ragonot, 1887 and Hafisia lundbladi Amsel, 1950 , syn. nov. of Zophodiodes leucocostella Ragonot, 1887 .
