Diagnosis. The specie can be distinguished from known species of Compterosmittia by the following combination of characters: anal lobe reduced, and AR 0.39–0.47; all wing veins and cells bare; supraalars with two setae; inferior volsella composed of anterior bare lobe and posterior pointed lobe; megaseta dentate.

Etymology. Name after Prof. Xin-Hua Wang, for his outstanding contribution to the knowledge of Chironomidae taxonomy; noun in nominative case.

Description. Male (n = 6).

Total length 1.42–1.81, 1.60 mm. Wing length 0.90–1.16, 1.03 mm. Total length/wing length 1.34–1.80, 1.56. Wing length/length of profemur 2.20–2.54, 2.40.

Colouration. ( Fig. 3C View FIGURE 3 ) Head, legs and abdomen light brown. Thorax yellowish brown. Wing pale yellow.

Head. ( Fig. 1A View FIGURE 1 , 2B View FIGURE 2 ) Antenna with 13 flagellomeres, ultimate flagellomere 152–209, 174 μm long. AR 0.39– 0.47, 0.43. Temporal setae 6–7, 7, including 2–3, 2 inner verticals, 2–3, 2 outer verticals, and 2–3, 2 postorbitals. Clypeus with 12–16, 14 setae. Tentorium 94–106, 103 μm long, 15–20, 16 μm wide. Stipes 74–99, 84 μm long, 5 μm wide. Palpomere lengths of three specimens (in μm): 16–19, 17–19; 19–25, 23; 44–56, 50; 44–55, 51; 48–68, 63; Pm5/ Pm3: 1.09–1.45, 1.27.

Thorax. ( Fig. 1B View FIGURE 1 , 2C View FIGURE 2 ) Antepronotals without seta. Dorsocentrals 4–6, 5; acrostichals 5–8, 6; supraalars 2–3, 2; prealars 2–4, 3. Scutellum with 4 setae.

Legs. Fore leg bearing single tibial spur, 30–43, 38 μm long; Mid legs with two spurs, 15–21, 18 μm and 20–22, 21 μm long; Spurs of hind tibia 12–21, 17 μm and 31–38, 34 μm long. Hind tibial comb with 10 spines, 34–40, 37 μm long, 25–30, 28 μm wide. Width of fore tibia at apex 24–28, 26 μm, of mid tibia 23–28, 26 μm, of hind tibia 29–33, 31 μm. Sensilla chaetica absent. Hypopygium. ( Fig. 1D–E View FIGURE 1 , 3A–B,3D–E View FIGURE 3 ) Anal point tapered, 18–28, 23 μm long, 24–31, 27 μm wide at base, bearing 5–8, 7 lateral setae on each side. Laterosternite IX with 6–7, 6 setae. Phallapodeme 33–47, 40 μm long. Transverse sternapodeme 51–61, 56 μm long, with oral projections. Inferior volsella 10–20, 14 μm long, composed of anterior bare lobe and posterior pointed lobe. Gonocoxite 91–137, 111 μm long. Gonostylus 45–65, 54 μm long. Megaseta 7–10, 9 μm long, dentate. HR 1.83–2.33, 2.06. HV 2.59–3.58, 2.99.

Remarks. This species was found in alpine streams in the Oriental China and generally emerges in the late summer evening.The new species can be separated from other members of the genus by having low AR(0.39–0.47)and all veins and cells bare in wing combinate with character of inferior volsella. Compterosmittia wangi Liu sp. nov. resembles C. dentispina (Saether) by the characters of wing and bilobed inferior volsella, whereas the latter lacks of supraalar seta in thorax obviously different from the new species. C. wangi Liu sp. nov. is also similar to C. berui Mendes, Andersen et Saether , C. duodecima Lin, Yan, Liu & Wang , C. nerius (Curran) , C. procera Lin, Yan, Liu & Wang and C. virga Wang in some measurement characteristics and features in hypopygia, but there are also differences ( Table 2 View TABLE 2 ).

Distribution. Oriental China (Hunan and Jiangxi provinces).
