Type species: Cicadetta montana (Scopoli) .
There are four species and one subspecies of Cicadetta in North America north of Mexico (Sanborn and Heath, in preparation) but the genus is well represented around the world ( Metcalf, 1963c). One species and the subspecies occur in Florida.
The species of Cicadetta can be separated easily from other North American cicadas by the fused median and cubitus anterior veins emerging from the apex of the basal cell in the tegmina (fig. 166). The median and cubitus anterior veins arise from the arculus separately in all other North American genera. Species of Cicadetta also lack timbal covers completely (fig. 168).
