Selaginella exaltata (Kunze) Spring, Bull. Acad. Roy. Sci. Bruxelles View in CoL 10: 234. 1843.
Range: — Costa Rica to Bolivia (PA) and northern Brazil.
Ecology: —Common; scrambling in humid forests, mostly along forest borders and in disturbed or secondary vegetation; to 300 m.
Notes: —Unmistakable climbing or scrambling species reaching up to 3(–8) m tall, with tripinnate, frond-like, pubescent branches. This species, along with a few other close relatives, may be allied to the other articulate species, and may have an isolated position within the family ( Zhou et al. 2015; Weststrand & Korall 2016a). Results of recent molecular work are somewhat conflicting, and additional sampling of seemingly related species needs to be conducted.
