Range: —Andes from Colombia and Venezuela to Bolivia (BE, CH, CO, LP, SC, TA), central Argentina, east to Paraguay, southern Brazil, and Uruguay. Reports from Costa Rica and Panama are based on misidentified specimens. Ecology: —Common; terrestrial and on rocks, occasionally at the bases of tree trunks, in dry to humid forests, often on open soil, on rocks or stone walls; to 2700 m. Notes: —The plants are more easily mistaken for a moss than for any other Selaginella .
