Specimens examined. Total: 10♂♂, 1♀. 8♂♂, 1♀, BRAZIL, Espírito Santo State, Santa Tereza, Nova Lom- bardia Forestal Reserve , 14 and 15.1.1967, N.D. Santos leg., in MNRJ ; 1♂, Espírito Santo State, Santa Tereza , 01.i.1968, P. Elias leg., in FAAL ; 1♂, Minas Gerais State, São Gonçalo do Rio Abaixo , PETI Environmental Sta- tion, x.1988, A.B.M. Machado leg., in ABMM .

Diagnosis. This species presents a unique combination of characters that separates it from the remaining species: larger size (but smaller than M. mecistogastrum ), longitudinal ridge of cercus not entire (i.e. disrupted along cercus), more pronounced on apical 1/2 ( Figs. 3 i–l, 8c–d); sclerotized apex of cercus globose with no apparent teeth ( Figs. 3l, 8d); tubercle quadrangular with a slightly concave apex ( Fig. 2e); segment one of genital ligula with a pair of thin lateral sclerotized processes in flexure, inner fold sub triangular in lateral view, proximal to flexure, segment two very long, bifid, with a pair of projections on its apex ( Fig. 4c). Posterior lobe of female prothorax not divided in separated lobes, medially concave ( Fig. 6c), laterally slightly elevated ( Fig. 7b); lateral margin of prothorax widens towards the base ( Fig. 7b); genital valves slightly surpass S10 posterior margin not reaching level of cercus ( Fig. 9f); notopleural suture a smoothly curved line ( Fig. 7b); tubercle roughly quadrangular with irregular margins ( Fig. 2f).

Distribution. Similar to M. caldense , M. canaanense has a limited range of occurrence and to this date it is known only from the States of Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais. It is also a rare species in collections, and of the examined material the most recent specimen was collected in 1988.
