8. Syzygium malabaricum (Beddome) Gamble (1919: 481) View in CoL . = Eugenia malabarica Beddome (1872: 199) . Lectotype (designated here):— INDIA. Kerala: Wayanad district, Swamps, s.d., R.H. Beddome s.n. (left hand side specimen of MH00002091!; isolectotypes CAL0000011454!, right hand side specimens of MH00002091!). Remaining syntypes:— INDIA. Anamallays (Anaimalai), s.d., R.H. Beddome s.n. (both specimens of MH00238344!).
Distribution:— India, Western Ghats (Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu), endemic.
Notes:— Eugenia malabarica was described by Beddome (1872) based on the specimens collected by him from Wayanad in swampy places between 2000–4500 ft. and Anaimalai. Two herbarium sheets of Beddome from swampy places, Wayanad (CAL0000011454 and MH00002091) and one from Anaimalai (MH00238344) were traced. Of these, the left hand side specimen of MH00002091 ( Figure 5 View FIGURE 5 ) is better preserve and is designated here as the lectotype. The specimens collected by Beddome from Wayanad in March 1881 at BM (BM000944123) and in 1873 at K (K000821357) are not original material because collected after publication of the protologue.
