Sperchon sandozi Bader, 1988 , nov. syn.

Material examined: Sperchon sandozi Bader 1988 , type series NHMB (River Rhine at Basel), holotype 3, Switzerland, "2 RFR 6 0 3.1987 coll. EAWAG "; paratypes: 3 3, 7 Ƥ, 4 Dn, same site, date and collector, labelled "2 RFR 4, 2 RFR 6, 2 RFR10, 2 DRL 11, 2 DRL 12 and 2 AU M"; The Netherlands, Keersop, 28.05.1991 (0/1/0).

Discussion: Bader (1988) stated in the original description that males of S. sandozi are characterized by the presence of a dorsal shield, but the holotype has a pattern of dorsal plates as is found typically in many other species of the genus. With regard to measurements, as well as shape and setation of palps and legs no differences could be found between the holotype of S. sandozi and S. hispidus . As shown from an analysis of the paratypes, Bader dealt with a mix of S. clupeifer (with dorsal shield in males) and S. hispidus (with numerous dorsal plates in males); a deutonymph of Lebertia sp. is also labelled as a paratype. Sperchon sandozi must be considered a junior synonym of S. hispidus .
